TOPIC: WHEN GOD SAYS, "GO"
THEME SCRIPTURE: “And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the Lord came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, shew thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth. – 1 Kings 18:1
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- If God wanted to send rain, why did He need Elijah to go and show himself to Ahab?
After years of drought, hiddenness, and quiet faithfulness, the word of the Lord comes again to Elijah: “Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain.” The command is brief, but the weight is immense. Elijah is sent from obscurity back into danger, from dependence into confrontation.
God’s timing is deliberate. The drought had done its work—not only in the land, but in revealing the emptiness of false gods.
Now God moves His servant from preparation to public witness. Faithfulness in private always precedes fruitfulness in public.
Elijah had learned to trust God at the brook, in a widow’s home, and in the shadow of death itself. Now that same trust must be carried into obedience that is costly. God does not merely comfort His servants; He commissions them.
Origen wrote, “The soul that has learned obedience in secret is made ready for boldness in the open.” Elijah’s courage before Ahab is not sudden. It is the result of years of listening, waiting, and obeying without applause.
Notice that God promises rain before there is any sign of it. The land is still dry. Ahab is still hostile. Baal is still worshiped. Yet God speaks as though the outcome is settled. Faith responds not to appearances, but to the word of the Lord.
Ambrose of Milan observed, “God does not delay His promises; He prepares His servants to receive them.” What feels like a delay is often a formation. God was not withholding rain arbitrarily—He was shaping a prophet who could stand when the moment came.
This passage challenges our preference for comfort over calling. We may welcome God’s provision, but hesitate when He asks us to step into hard conversations, visible obedience, or costly faith. Yet the same God who sustained Elijah in hiding now sends him forward with authority.
When God says “Go,” He does not send us alone. He goes with us.
Key Takeaway
God’s timing is purposeful. Seasons of waiting and preparation equip us for courageous obedience when He calls us to step forward. So, don't rush. But wait for God's timing; He will make all things beautiful.
Remain blessed.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD
- Where might God be calling you out of comfort and into obedience?
- Have you interpreted delay as absence rather than preparation?
- What promise from God do you need to trust before you see evidence?
PRAYER
Father,
You know the seasons of my life and the work you are doing in me. I receive patience in times of waiting and courage when you say, “Go.” Help me trust that your promises are sure, even when circumstances remain unchanged. Prepare my heart for obedience that honors you, wherever you send me. In Jesus’ precious name. Amen.
