TOPIC: THE POWER OF YOUR WORDS
THEME SCRIPTURE: “The words of the godly are a life-giving fountain; the words of the wicked conceal violent intentions." Proverbs 10:11 NLT
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
1. How powerful are words?
2. Can we joke with words?
In today’s devotional, let’s reflect on the power of our words. Proverbs 10:11 teaches that our words can be a “life-giving fountain,” while Proverbs 10:19 reminds us that “too much talk leads to sin.”
Words, used wisely, can impart wisdom and encouragement, while careless words can hurt deeply and last for years.
Proverbs 10:20-21 describes the words of the godly as “sterling silver” that can uplift and strengthen. We should therefore be intentional with our words, especially in close relationships. A well-chosen word of encouragement is a gift that strengthens and builds character.
It is interesting that David, though anointed to be king, rose up one day and headed towards the direction of rich Nabal to kill him in his anger.
It was all due to the words Nabal spoke to David.
When David's servants approached Nabal to ask him for supplies, Nabal refused and said, “Who is this fellow David?” Nabal sneered at the young men. “Who does this son of Jesse think he is? There are lots of servants these days who run away from their masters. Should I take my bread and my water and my meat that I’ve slaughtered for my shearers and give it to a band of outlaws who come from who knows where?” (1 Sam 25:10-11). Before David would commit murder, Nabal's wife approached David with words: "Now, my lord, as surely as the LORD lives and you yourself live, since the LORD has kept you from murdering and taking vengeance into your own hands, let all your enemies and those who try to harm you be as cursed as Nabal is. And here is a present that I, your servant, have brought to you and your young men. Please forgive me if I have offended you in any way. The LORD will surely reward you with a lasting dynasty, for you are fighting the LORD's battles. And you have not done wrong throughout your entire life." (1 Sam 25:26-28).
Are we using our words to lift others up, or are we quick to criticize? Parents, your words are powerful—use them to encourage, not to tear down.
In your home, strive to create an atmosphere of affirmation and love, offering words that inspire confidence and growth.
Remember, the power of life and death is in the tongue. Choose your words wisely and encourage those around you, especially those closest to you. It’s never too late to speak words that bring life.
Remain blessed
