TOPIC: THE SHEPHERD WHO NEVER FAILS
THEME SCRIPTURE: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1, NKJV).
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
1. What does it mean for God to be our Shepherd?
Sarah, a young mother battling stage IV cancer, sat in her car after a scan, trembling. “Why isn’t God healing me?” she prayed. Then, her phone lit up with a text: “Read Psalm 23—He’s walking with you.” As she read, tears fell. “Even though I walk through the valley… You are with me” (v. 4). For the first time, Sarah stopped begging for escape and began clinging to her Shepherd’s presence. Her journey didn’t shorten, but her fear did.
Like Sarah, we face valleys that test our trust. But Jesus—the Good, Great, and Chief Shepherd—invites us to rest in His relentless care.
If we are going to rest in His relentless care, we must first understand what it means to have God as a Shepherd.
First, He is the Good Shepherd: Your Sacrificial Guardian
Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11). He doesn’t just guide; He dies for us. Charles Spurgeon wrote, “Christ’s sheep are safe because He paid the ultimate price to call them His own.” When life threatens to overwhelm, remember: Your Shepherd’s scars prove His love.
So, learn to start each day with this prayer: “Shepherd, I surrender my fears. Lead me.”
Secondly, He is the Great Shepherd: Your Resurrected Strength
Hebrews 13:20 calls Jesus the “great Shepherd of the sheep,” raised from the dead to equip us with “everything good for doing His will.” Sarah’s strength to endure chemo came not from grit but from His resurrection power. A.W. Tozer said, “God is not a tool to fix your problems—He’s the life that carries you through them.”
If so, when weakness hits, declare: “The Great Shepherd lives in me; I am not alone. I have His strength.”
Thirdly, He is the Chief Shepherd: Your Eternal Hope
1 Peter 5:4 promises that when Jesus, the “Chief Shepherd,” appears, “you will receive a crown of never-ending glory.” Our trials are temporary; His reward is eternal. Augustine wrote, “Our hearts find no rest until they rest in the Shepherd’s eternal fold.”
Beloved, you are not wandering alone. The Shepherd who led David through battles walks with you now.
