TOPIC: GODLY CONFRONTATION

THEME SCRIPTURE: "And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the Lord. And Nathan said unto David, The Lord also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die."  2 Samuel 12:13 KJV

PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:

1. When we encounter believers in sin, what are we to do?

Godly confrontation is not the same as proud confrontation. Often, when we hear of confrontation, then it means there is a score to settle. Someone has bruised our ego and we need to make sure that we set the records straight.  Godly confrontation had nothing to do with our pride. It has to do with helping others (friends, colleagues, loved ones, etc.) lift up their game, especially above sin.

Confronting sin is never easy. It’s not a task anyone eagerly volunteers for, especially when done for the right reasons.

Often, it’s approached with tears, reluctance, and a heavy heart. Think of the prophet Nathan, who surely spent time in prayer before courageously stepping into King David’s throne room to confront him about his adultery, murder, and hypocrisy. Nathan’s boldness wasn’t born out of pride but of love and obedience to God.

The Bible never encourages us to ignore sin or adopt a “let sleeping dogs lie” attitude. Jesus, the embodiment of love, never turned a blind eye when His disciples strayed. He corrected them because He cared deeply about their hearts, their destiny, and their walk with God. Godly confrontation, though uncomfortable, is an act of love.

Just as a doctor addresses unhealthy habits, a coach challenges laziness, or a parent corrects a child, we confront because we care. Even our closest friends or spouses may lovingly point out blind spots that hinder our relationship with God or our witness to others.

When the time comes to confront someone, you may be reluctant—but do it. It’s part of speaking the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15) and pulling others out of the fire (Jude 1:23).

Precious one, here are five principles to guide you when the time comes for a godly confrontation:

Firstly, choose the right time. Timing matters. Doing the right thing at the wrong time can do more harm than good. Pray for discernment and wait for the Lord’s leading. Rushing into confrontation rarely yields fruit.

Secondly, speak the truth: Confrontation isn’t the place for assumptions or hearsay. Be prepared with facts, examples, and clarity. Speak only what is true and necessary.

Thirdly, use wise words: Like Nathan, choose your words carefully. Proverbs 25:11 reminds us that “a word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.” Pray for wisdom and gentleness in your speech.

Fourthly, offer hope: The goal of confrontation is restoration, not condemnation (Galatians 6:1). Hold up a mirror to reveal the truth, but always point to the window of God’s grace and redemption.

Lastly, leave the results to God. After Nathan confronted David, he went home (2 Samuel 12:15). He didn’t hover or micromanage the outcome.

Trust God to work in the person’s heart. Your role is to plant seeds; the Holy Spirit will bring the harvest.

Confrontation is never easy, but it’s a sacred responsibility when done in love. It reflects God’s heart for reconciliation and growth. Today, ask God for the courage to speak the truth when needed, the wisdom to do it well, and the faith to trust Him with the results. Remember, love always seeks the best for others—even when it’s hard.

Remain blessed!
