Theme: I SEEK A SIGN
THEME SCRIPTURE: "But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the Lord hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be a sign unto us." 1 Samuel 14:10 KJV
PREPARATORY QUESTION
1. What do you think when it comes to one seeking a sign from God to take steps of faith?
In the Old Testament, there are many instances where men and women sought a sign from God to gather confidence to do what God wanted them to do. The case of Gideon seeking a sign from God to appreciate his role as the army commander to lead God's battle against the Midianites is a typical example. King Hezekiah sought a sign when Isaiah the prophet brought him word that he would recover from his illness because God had added 15 more years to his life. Time will fail us to look at others who sought signs from God. However, we cannot skip Jonathan, the son of Kish, who sought a sign in his attempt to bring the battle to the doorstep of the Philistines. Jonathan was embarking on a dangerous adventure with only his armor bearer. Crossing enemy lines is not something to be taken lightly in battle. To be sure that God was with him, he sought a sign. He concluded that the sign from God would be in how the Philistines greeted them, and he seemed to have chosen the least likely response (1 Sam 14:9–10). When they moved into view below the garrison, they were met at first with words of contempt: “Look, the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have hidden” (1 Sam 14:11). But then, to his delight, Jonathan heard the words that signaled victory to him: “Come up to us” (1 Sam 14:12). Jonathan said unto his armor bearer, "Come up after me: for the LORD hath delivered them into the hand of Israel" (1 Sam 14:12).
Beloved, the critical question remains unanswered--"Can the believer today also seek a sign from God based on circumstances and incidents to find the will of God?" Should we...? Of course not.
If circumstances and incidents were necessary today in finding the will of God, the Holy Spirit would be unnecessary. In the days of Gideon, Jonathan, and King Hezekiah, the Spirit of the Lord was not indwelling in men. Today, you and I have God's Spirit in us and with us (John 14:17).
This Spirit is the one Jesus emphasized will show us things to come and guide us into all truth (John 16:13).
Hence, at all times, if we want to know the mind of God, we should consult the Holy Spirit.
Precious One, until we draw near to the Spirit, strengthen our relationship with Him, and know His voice, we will continue to live a life of trial and error. Do you seek a sign? The Holy Spirit is your sign. Do you seek a sign, beloved? Yield to Him and let Him guide you into all truth.
Remain blessed.
