TOPIC: TRUTH IS HEAVY
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Thus says the LORD: 'He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence; but he who goes over to the Chaldeans shall live; his life shall be as a prize to him, and he shall live.' — Jeremiah 38:2 NKJV
PREPARATORY QUESTION
- What does it mean for truth to be heavy?
In Jeremiah 38, an honest prophet stands before a king who prefers comfort over clarity. Zedekiah was not interested in what was true from God's prophet—only by what was pleasant. Jeremiah’s message was clear but felt intolerable: the city would fall, the king would be captured, and resistance would fail. Truth, when unwelcome, sounded to Zedekiah like pessimism rather than divine mercy.
But Jeremiah could not bend. His loyalty was not to outcomes, but to God. He bore what many cannot: “Truth". Truth indeed is heavy. Few men can carry it
Zedekiah’s question— “Why do you say this?”—reveals a heart that wants pleasant lies, not revelation. People driven by comfort rarely understand those who are governed by conviction. They cannot grasp why anyone would speak a hard truth, obey a hard command, or accept a hard path.
Yet Scripture consistently honors those who choose truth over ease. Athanasius, who stood alone against heresy, was described as “Athanasius contra mundum” —Athanasius against the world. He famously wrote, “If the world is against the truth, then I am against the world.” Truth is not always soothing, but it is always saving.
Sometimes God’s truth wounds before it heals. It dismantles illusions before it builds wisdom. It confronts our desires so that it may restore our souls.
As Augustine said, “The truth is not mine nor yours; it belongs to all who can love it.” To love the truth is to trust God more than the emotional impact of His words. It is believed that the unpleasant truth is kinder than comfortable deception.
In a world that chases affirmation, God calls us to courageous honesty—to be people who value reality over being urged on, repentance over denial, obedience over applause. These are the “Jeremiahs” —men and women who will carry the weight of truth because they know it is the only path to life.
Beloved, choose truth even when it overturns your preferences. Choose truth because God speaks it. Choose truth because it is love in its purest form.
Remain blessed.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD
- Where am I tempted to avoid God’s truth because it feels uncomfortable or confronts my desires?
- Do I value truth more than being affirmed, praised, or reassured?
- How can I cultivate a heart that welcomes correction rather than resists it?
- Whose voice—God’s or culture’s—shapes my definition of what is “pleasant”?
PRAYER
Lord, give me a heart that loves the truth, not just the truths that comfort me, but also the ones that challenge me. Make me courageous like Jeremiah—faithful to Your Word even when it is heavy. Remove from me the spirit of Zedekiah that seeks pleasant illusions. Teach me to trust Your wisdom, submit to Your correction, and walk in the freedom that only truth can give.” In Jesus’ precious name. Amen.
