TOPIC: COME DOWN IMMEDIATELY
THEME SCRIPTURE: “So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully.” — Luke 19:6 (ESV)
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- When God calls us by name, how are we to respond?
Zacchaeus didn’t delay. When Jesus called his name and asked him to come down immediately, he didn’t negotiate or hesitate. He hurried down and joyfully received Him. In this simple act, we witness the essence of true faith: eager obedience and joyful surrender.
Beloved, if we are going to enjoy the unmerited grace of God, we would have to learn from Zacchaeus' experience and response.
- Immediate Response to Grace
God doesn’t always call twice. When Jesus stopped beneath that sycamore tree, Zacchaeus had one opportunity to respond. And he seized it. As St. John Chrysostom wrote, “To delay is also to disobey. When God speaks, urgency is obedience”. How often do we feel the Spirit’s prompting, yet procrastinate out of fear, pride, or comfort?
- Joy is the Fruit of Obedience
Zacchaeus didn’t descend reluctantly. Joy welled up in him. Why? Because grace had found him. In a world that had rejected him, Jesus had singled him out. Today, God will single you out to do something with you, or through, or in you. That’s what grace does—it surprises the unworthy and fills them with joy.
Augustine captured this beautifully: “God does not choose us because we are good, but because He is good.”
- Surrender Requires Action
Coming down from that tree meant more than stepping onto the ground—it meant coming out of hiding. It meant risking public shame and being vulnerable. But surrender is never safe; it is always costly. Still, Zacchaeus chose presence with Jesus over comfort in his elevated position.
You may be a man or woman of elevated position, power, or influence. You will need to come down if you are going to bask in grace.
Precious one, Jesus is still calling names today. He still stops for the forgotten and waits for the ready. But the invitation demands a response. Will you come down quickly, laying aside status, pride, or fear to welcome Him with joy?
Remember: Prompt obedience opens the door to divine fellowship. Don’t miss your moment—come down quickly. Jesus is calling.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD:
- What is your “sycamore tree”—the place of safety or pride you need to come down from?
- Have you ever delayed when God clearly called you? What was the result?
- What would it look like for you to respond to the Spirit’s prompting with joy today?
PRAYER
Jesus, when You call, help me to come down quickly. Break my hesitation. Teach me to welcome You joyfully, no matter the cost. I surrender my pride, my comfort, and my fear. Let me not delay when grace calls. Just like Zacchaeus, I want to receive You with eagerness and joy. Glory to God. Amen.
