TOPIC: A BLESSING FOR ALL NATIONS

THEME SCRIPTURE:  “I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed”Genesis 12:3

 PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:

  1. Are you living a consecrated life?
  2. Or are there areas of your life that you have not fully yielded to God?

The purpose of election is to set apart a people distinct from all others (Ephesians 1:4-5). Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly expresses His desire to distinguish His chosen ones from all others. From His call to Abraham and, by extension, to the nation of Israel (Deuteronomy 7:6) to Christ’s sacrifice, which established a holy people for His glory (1 Peter 2:9), the consistent theme is clear: those who belong to God are set apart from those who do not.

In our focus text today, we witness how God, through His sovereign grace, unfolds His mercy through election to the whole of humanity in His call to Abraham. To distinguish Abraham from all others, God calls Abraham to “Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house…” – Genesis 12:1. To understand God's call for Abraham to separate from his country, kindred, and father's house, it is important to recognize that Ur of the Chaldeans was a city deeply rooted in idolatry and pagan worship. For Abraham to be worthy to bear the name of YHWH, he needed to cut all ties that connected him spiritually and physically to everything pagan, which always attracts the hot displeasure of God.

God’s call to Abraham reveals His redemptive plan to restore the broken relationship between Him and humanity. In His call, He makes a gracious promise to Abraham “…and in you all the families (nations) of the earth shall be blessed”-Genesis 12:3.

This was a blessing and a covenant that would ultimately shape the history of salvation. It was a promise that was ultimately fulfilled in Christ Jesus. Jesus Christ, the Messiah from the lineage of Abraham, is the true blessing to humanity. Jesus offers redemption and restores our broken relationship with God.

Dearly beloved in Christ, as we reflect on this promise during the Lenten season, we must recognize that God’s call to Abraham—to separate both spiritually and physically from anything that takes His place—is the same call to us today.

It is a call to turn away from all that defiles and hinders our relationship with God and to pursue a life of holiness through the finished work of Christ on the cross. Abraham’s journey reminds us that following God requires faith and obedience to His word.

This season also calls us to fix our hearts on God and His promises. Just as He was faithful in fulfilling His covenant with Abraham, He remains faithful to us—yesterday, today, and forever. Amen.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD:

  1. Are you fully following God wholeheartedly?

 PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your faithfulness to Abraham in extending his blessings to all nations to me through the redemptive work of Christ on the cross. I ask for the grace and enabling strength to fully separate from everything that takes your place in my life and to be fully committed in my walk with You in Christ Jesus, Amen.
