THEME: THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

Theme Scripture: Then spoke Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.  John 8:12 KJV

PREPARATORY QUESTION

1. Who is the Light of this world?

Yea, though the earth revolves around the sun, the world seems to be a dark place. Though the sun gives light by day and the moon by night, our world is a dark—full of troubles, suffering and aches. Man, born of a woman, is saddled daily with endless decisions in search of peace of mind. He has no choice but to chart his course and yet he cannot see beyond his present circumstances.  Many people who were destined for greatness came to the end of their lives before they realized that they have missed their destination. What went wrong? How possible?

Today, you will often hear from both Christians and non-Christians this old statement: "It is not possible to be genuine [or honest] and still do well in life". This, they say, to allude that the world we live in is so dark and corrupt it is not possible to stay out of it and do well. But that is not true. Where there is darkness, light is rather needed. Where there is corruption, righteousness is required. Then comes the question, "What light can enable man live a meaningful and fulfilling life in a dark and corrupt world?"

Light is needed to brighten our path, to see dangers and avoid them. Light brings guidance and disperses darkness. In this troubled world, we all need light. Not the lights of the sun the moon, but the true light which lights every man who comes into the world (John 1:9).

In the courts of the Jerusalem Temple stood two huge golden candelabras. On the first and each succeeding night of the week of the Feast of Tabernacle, these were lit, to pour a brilliant flood of light over the temple and the city. It was in this same temple that Jesus stood and cried out to all, "I am the light of the world. He that follows me shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light if life." Glory to God.

There is the light of the sun and the moon. But there's also the light of life capable of lightening the life and path of everyone who comes into this dark world.

In your darkest moment in life, precious one, you will need the light of this world. When the going gets tough and you do not know where to turn, you will need this light of this world. When you are confused, perplexed, hurt, broken, wounded and desperate in life, you will need the light of this world. When you come to the point when you realize that your life is empty and going nowhere, you will need the light of this world. This light of life is Jesus, Son of the living God. John the Baptist was a burning and a shinning lamp (John 5:35). But Jesus is the Shinning and the life-giving light (John 1:4-5).

What is even more remarkable is that, whosoever follows this light eventually becomes the light of the world. (Matt 5:14).  Being a light to the world, beloved, you cannot be hidden. See, a city set on a hill cannot be hidden, right? Nobody lights a candle and places it under a basket. Rather, that candle is placed on a candlestick to give light to all (Matt 5:15).

Precious One, if you have not turned to Jesus trusted Him with your life, you are missing the light of this world. If you have turned to Him and yet you are not following Jesus, beloved, you have picked your own pocket. Go for the light of the world. Follow this light and you will never walk in darkness. Remain blessed.
