TOPIC: STUDY GOD’S WORD
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” – Colossians 3:16
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- Why should you commit to studying the Bible?
- How can God’s people overcome sin through His Word?
The greatest need of the believer today is to spend time in the word of God. The word of God (the Bible) is our rule book or manual for being members of Jesus' Kingdom. It is impossible to be a member of a group or society without making the rule book your friend. Can the lawyer practice law without making the constitution his cherished companion?
Our generation has seen multitudes that claim identity with Christianity but have little or no scriptures in them.
In our focus text today, Paul by the Spirit emphasizes the necessity and place of the word of God in the life of the Christian. He says that God's word must dwell in every Christian richly. Not a little but be heavily loaded with it. The reason is that it is God’s word that must be the basis and guide of such Christian disciplines as prayer, fasting, Christian fellowship, etc. A Christian without the word of God is unstable in all his ways. The centrality of the word of God in our daily living and worship is here emphasized. It is the word that we must use in teaching, encouraging ourselves, and singing.
The Word must also be our vocabulary and motivation for our actions.
Beloved in Christ Jesus, there is significant evidence in the Bible that Jesus, through whom we’ve been called and brought to God, did nothing outside the word of God. He was thoroughly guided and instructed by the Holy Scriptures. It will be catastrophic to assume victory over sin in the absence of the word of God. The Psalmist rightly highlighted victory over sin when he said, “your word have I hidden in my heart that I might not sin against you”. It is the word of God that gives us the strength and the tenacity to say no to sin in all its forms. It is the word of God that renews our minds, to keep our purity, in a world that seeks to compromise us at the slightest opportunity.
By feeding thoroughly and meditatively on the word of God, the same Word will become flesh and dwell in our spirit richly.
In times of adversity, temptation and evil days, it is the Word that has been made flesh in you that will produce the victory power you will need. The word of God is the lifeline for every Christian, neglect of the same will lead to stunted growth or death eventually. Will you resolve to ensure that you daily feed on God’s word faithfully? Will you commit to teaching your family God’s word in devotions every day? Living a victorious life in Christ begins with God’s word and it is sustained by the same Word. Go for the Word every day. Hallelujah!
