TOPIC: LIVE WELL; DIE NOBLY
THEME SCRIPTURE: “And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.” – Genesis 5:5
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- Adam lived almost to 1000 years yet he died. Could he had lived forever?
Beloved, if you were to die tomorrow, how would you summarize the life you’ve lived to date in three sentences?
Dr. Stuart Briscoe, the senior pastor of 30 years at Elmbrook Church in Brookfield, Wisconsin, has been a gospel preacher for years. He recounted his experience with Jody Albrecht, who battled with leukaemia for seven years before she died. In the later days of Jody's life, Dr. Briscoe and his wife visited her at the hospital. According to Dr. Briscoe, “We talked about her impending death quite openly but at no great length. Jody whispered, ‘Everything is in order and I’m packed and ready to go.’ She also quizzed me about my radio broadcast, its outreach, the response, and whether there was a financial need for the broadcast. She was ready to write a cheque for me at that instant. ‘How could I walk away from your deathbed holding a cheque in my little sticky fingers?’ I asked her. She smiled, put away the chequebook, and said, ‘Alright, I will mail it to you instead.’ A day before she passed, Jody called and said to us cheerfully, ‘I just wanted to call and say goodbye, dear friends, because I think I’ll probably reach heaven tomorrow, and I want to encourage you to go on with your work. Keep on telling them the Good News because it’s true.’ She hung up, and the following day she was gone”. Here is a woman who knew how to live well because she had already discovered how to die nobly. (As reported by J. Ogilvie)
Precious one, Adam lived 930 years, and yet he died.
It is appointed once for men to die, but after this judgment (Heb 9:27). How are you living, and how will you want to die? Nice things are always said about ‘the departed’ at funerals—he was there for his family, a hardworking man, serious with his career, helped his siblings, etc. But little is said or known about the skeletons in his cupboard. It’s only at the point when a man is told, “You have 3 months to live,” that he begins to reflect on the most important things in life. He begins to reconcile with those he’s hated for years and requests forgiveness from those he has cheated, hurt, or persecuted. At this point, he begins to seek God because he’ll soon meet his maker.
Apostle Paul, when he came to the end of his life, nobly said, “I have fought a good fight; I have finished my course; I have kept the faith (2 Tim 4:7).
Every life has a good fight to fight, to live above corruption, self-centeredness, and the sweet influences of sin. God, who is the source of every life, has an assignment for them all. Finishing your course or assignment is as necessary as breathing. Never live for the mere sake of prolonging existence. Find out your assignment; stay on that course to completion because it will change lives. Finally, make sure you keep the faith—faith in Christ as your true Savior and you as God’s righteousness. Have faith in God’s Word and His love; they have the power to change the unchangeable. Have faith in the God-kind of faith because faith works. This is the most noble way to live and die. God bless you more.
