TOPIC: HE’S BOTH LORD AND CHRIST
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Therefore, let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God has made that same Jesus, whom you have crucified, both Lord and Christ:” – Acts 2:36
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- What does it mean to know something assuredly?
- What does it mean for God to make Jesus both Lord and Christ?
One of America’s defense secretaries who will always be remembered is Donald Rumsfeld. He oversaw America’s invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, which later became controversial subjects. In the later years of Rumsfeld's life, he published his memoir "Known and Unknowns”. The title comes from his famous remark that in military intelligence, there are things we know that we don’t know, and there are things we don’t know that we know. But there are things we know that we know, and there will always be some things we don’t know that we don’t know.
What we know that we know is definite knowledge.
This is what Peter was referring to when he spoke to the house of Israel to know assuredly. That they should know with all certainty and unequivocally that the one God has made both Lord and Christ is the same Jesus whom they have crucified. Precious One, you who have believed in Jesus, do you know Him as both Lord and Christ? You might have been told. You might have read about it.
But can you say that you know that you know, that Jesus is both Lord and Christ?
To know Jesus as Lord is to know Him as the Master of your life—the one we take instructions from for our lives. As Master, He is the one we live for. Upon seeing the pierced hands and wounded side of Jesus, all Thomas could say to Him was, “My Lord and my God” (John 20:28). The ox knows its owner, and the ass knows its master’s crib (Isaiah 1:3), but do you know Jesus as Lord? Precious One, if assuredly you know Jesus as Lord, His words would be final for you. You will honor and worship Him (Mal 1:6). You will fear incurring His displeasure.
Moreover, if Jesus is your Lord, you will have no cares in this life. This is why the Apostle Paul can confidently admonish, “Be anxious for nothing” (Phil 4:6).
To know Jesus as the Christ (or the Messiah) is to know Him as God’s anointed one. It is to know Him as the One God anointed with the Holy Ghost and power, to bring mankind deliverance from the bondage of sin. Moses, who was anointed to bring Israel from bondage to the promised land, was unable to complete the task. He then spoke of another Deliverer, Savior, and Redeemer, like unto him whom God will send. He, said Moses, You must listen to (Deut 18:15; Deut 18:18–19).
Jesus, the Anointed One, is the one who can bring us all into our greater and superior destiny.
No one can reach his full potential and find fulfilment without Jesus. Do you know Him, Beloved in Christ, both as your Lord and Christ? Also, do you live for Him both as your Lord and Messiah? Everyone must live and die for something in this life. Money? Fame? Power? No, but live for Jesus, your Lord and Christ. God bless you more.
