TOPIC: I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believes in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live” – John 11:25
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- What is Jesus saying by His statement, ‘I am the resurrection and the life’?
- Can the dead believe in Jesus to live again?
Four days have passed since the death of Lazarus. He and his sisters Mary and Martha were close to Jesus. Jews believed the deceased soul lingered around the body for three days, hoping to return, and the soul departs when the body begins to decompose. When Jesus arrived, Lazarus's case was a hopeless one. So Martha said to Jesus, ‘If you had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died’ (John 11:21). Jesus assured her, "Your brother will live again" (John 11:23). What an assurance.
Precious One, sometimes we think we know so well the things of God, but after the Master has spoken, we realize we don't.
This is exactly what happened to Martha. She was familiar with the doctrine of the resurrection on the last day. So she told Jesus, "I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection on the last day." The Resurrection is that day when death will be annihilated and the dead will rise again, some to damnation and others to eternal glory. It is at this point that Jesus unequivocally tells Martha who He is: "I am the resurrection and the life”. It is like this: a special occasion where everyone is invited to lunch. That day and that lunch will be special if only that special chef shows up to do those special dishes. He will define that day. Similarly, Jesus points out to Martha that He carries the power of the resurrection, and He will bring that power into that day of resurrection, to annihilate death. If He, the Resurrection and the Life, is here, there is no need to wait till the day of the resurrection. "Your brother shall live again."
Beloved, Jesus boldly proclaims He is the Resurrection and the Life. It is not a concept He talks about, but who He is.
Such that whoever believes in Him clings to life and is united with His resurrection power in the now, living eternally thereafter. Remember, man is a spirit, and death is a spirit. Man dwells in a body while having a soul. Jesus, the resurrection and the life, has power over spiritual and physical death.
"Do you believe this?" Jesus asked Martha after telling her who He is. (John 11:26). Jesus asks you today, beloved in Christ, "Do you believe this, that He is the resurrection and the life?" Do you believe He can make alive that which is dead in a man’s life? Do you believe? Martha replied, "Yea, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world" (John 11:27). Today, also answer the Master with all your heart: "Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the resurrection and the life, the Son of God who came to die so I may live again." God bless you more.
