TOPIC: WHY WORSHIP THE LORD JESUS?
THEME SCRIPTURE: “And as they went to tell His disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying All hail. And they came and held Him by the feet, and worshipped Him.” – Matthew 28:9
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- Why was Jesus worshipped when He was resurrected from the grave?
- Is it right that we should worship Jesus?
Examining the focus scripture, the women who went to the tomb of Christ with spices were running back to the disciples. They had been told by an angel that Jesus was not here but had risen. On the way, they met the resurrected Jesus and worshipped Him. Further, in Galilee, when Jesus made His first appearance to the disciples, they worshipped Him (Matt 28:16-17).
Every year it feels like the world pauses to observe both Easter and Christmas. It is however very troubling that the central figure amid these festivities has generated so many contentions historically and now. The signs confirm that these controversies and contentions will be worse in the future. People have written and said so much to challenge the very Person of Jesus and why he does not deserve to be worshipped. However, there are too many reasons why it is necessary to worship the Lord Jesus.
We worship Jesus because He is God.
He shares in the very nature of God the Father. He has been with the Father since eternity past; He is begotten of the Father. He is the brightness of God’s glory and the exact imprint or image of the Father’s nature (Heb 1:3). In other words when you encounter him you have encountered the Father. He rightly affirmed audaciously “I and the Father are one – John 10:30.” The Bible makes us understand that the Jews present wanted to stone him because by that statement he claimed equality with God. Beloved, Jesus pointed out that the Father has ordained that all men should honour (reverence by worshipping) the Son. The one who does not honor (or reverence through worship) the Son does not honour the Father either” (John 5:23). No wonder His disciples worshipped Him.
We worship Jesus because all things have been committed into His hands (John 3:35).
This makes Jesus Supreme. All power in heaven and on the earth has been given to Him, and by that, everything and everyone comes under His authority and rule. Forty days after infallible proofs of his resurrection, he ascended on high and is seated on the right hand of God the Father Almighty where Angels, Authorities and powers are all subject to him – 1 Peter 3:22. In the new Jerusalem which is in heaven, there is no temple in it. Rather it is the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb (Jesus) who are the temple of it (Rev 21:22), revealing the co-equality of the Father and the Son.
Whatever gives you peace to worship God should be the same reason to worship Jesus.
“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever! – Revelation 5:13.”
Christians believe in the Doctrine of The Trinity (God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit) and each person of the Trinity is accorded the same worship and honor. Feel free always to worship the Lord Jesus; pour your heart to Him. He deserves it all. Hallelujah!
