TOPIC: YOUR CHARACTER SHAPES YOUR FUTURE
THEME SCRIPTURE: Gen 49:1
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- How important is character to the child of God?
- What character in the Bible will you like to be, and why?
What some Christians do not realize is that character shapes a greater part of our future. We are our character and the character we choose to play on this stage of life will carve a particular future for us. Knowing this Paul, by the Spirit, beseeches us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Rom 12:1-2).
Jacob was ready to die. He needed to give his children his last words. He called them one after the other, from the firstborn to the last, and prophesied what their future shall be.
Interestingly, Jacob saw their future through their character.
Some were disqualified to enter their destiny. Others were distinguished with a superior future and one was different and unique with his future.
For instance, Reuben was destined to be the touch-bearer and the one to act in the stead of his father but he was disqualified. This was because he could not control his sexual desires (Gen 49:3-4). Simeon and Levi were scattered because of their anger (Gen 49:5-7). Judah was distinguished because he was a lion’s whelp (robust, daring and a ‘go-getter’) – Gen 49:9-10. The same with Gad. He was distinguished as an unrelenting problem-solver who, though may lose the battle, will win his wars in life (Gen 49:19). Precious One, time will fail us to mention that of the other sons of Jacob, their character and future.
The critical question to ask today is this – what is my character and attitude in life? Am I greedy, self-centred, backbiter, divisive, full of anger, lover of pleasure, or abusive? Am I friendly, loving, sincere and trustworthy? Am I genuine with my relationships, humble, supportive or hardworking?
Every character you put out in life is like a seed you put in the ground. It will germinate, bear fruits and you will eat those fruits of your character.
Absalom, with subtilty, sought to take that which does not belong to him. Machiavellian he was but he died young (2 Sam 18:14). Gehazi, with greed, sought to outsmart his Master and Naaman (2 Kings 5:20). He went home with leprosy for himself and his entire generation (2 Kings 5:36). Ananias and Sapphira, with lying lips attempted to outsmart God. They both lost their lives (Acts 5:3-5). Samson was gifted but his uncontrolled passion brought him to his knees (Judges 16:1; Judges 16:20-24).
Precious One, character is so important to the Christian walk, such that if there is anything you should trade riches for, it is character. Gifted men became useless because they failed to deal with their improper characters.
You and I cannot make such a mistake. This is why the word of God has been given to us, to help us build the right characters for success in this life. It will help you renew your mind and influence your actions. The word of God is medicine, capable of healing us from improper characters. From today going forward, be conscious of your character and improve on them as you meditate on God’s word day by day. Where God is taking you it will take character to remain there. God bless you more.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD:
- If you will have to audit your character today, what will be your proper characters and which ones will be your improper character, according to God’s word?
CONFESSION
In Jesus’ Precious Name, I acknowledge that God’s word is potent, capable of shaping my mind and building my spirit to do better with my character. I affirm that today, I am walking perfectly in the right characters. I am cleansed this day by the word of God from any character that is not of God’s Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit is maturing daily in me in its varied expression to the Glory of God. Hallelujah!
