TOPIC: THE UNSHAKABLE INHERITANCE

THEME SCRIPTURE:  "Now if we are children, then we are heirs — heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ." —Romans 8:17 

 

PREPARATORY QUESTION

1. Are you living like someone still waiting to be adopted, or like someone who already owns the inheritance?

Adoption in the ancient world wasn't a symbolic gesture — it carried full legal weight. An adopted son received the same inheritance rights as a biological son, sometimes with even greater legal protection, because the adoption couldn't be reversed on a whim the way a birthright sometimes could be contested. When Paul reaches for this image to describe our relationship to God, he's not softening the language. He's making a legal claim: you are not a spiritual guest in God's house. You are a legal heir to everything in it.

This matters because so much of our spiritual life is lived as though we're still outsiders hoping to eventually belong — praying tentatively, serving to earn favor, treating God's blessings like distant possibilities reserved for someone more deserving. But Paul's logic runs entirely the opposite direction. The inheritance isn't a future reward for good behavior. It's a present legal status, already settled, the moment you became a child of God.

Notice, too, the specific phrase: co-heirs with Christ. Not lesser heirs, not honorary heirs, not heirs by association. The same inheritance Christ receives, you receive alongside him — not because you earned equal standing, but because he shared his. This is almost too generous to fully absorb. It means the resources of heaven aren't rationed out to believers by merit. They're distributed by relationship, and the relationship has already been secured.

If you're still living cautiously, unsure whether you actually belong to what you've been given, the issue isn't your inheritance. It's your awareness of it.

PRAYER

Father, thank you that I am not a guest in your house, but an heir with full rights in Christ. Forgive me for living cautiously when you've called me confidently. Help me walk today in the security of what already belongs to me, not in fear of what I might lose. In Jesus' precious name Amen.
