TOPIC: HOPE

THEME SCRIPTURE: “ For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.” -  1 Timothy 4:10

PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:

1. What is hope and why is it so important?

2. What does it mean to hope in God?

Life is interesting. What keeps life going is not so much the tangible but the intangible. One of the intangibles that keep life going is hope. Hope is a future expectation. It is about having confidence in the future. Many people hope to live to old age, and as a result, they make big plans towards old age. There are others who have hope that their current situations will not be permanent.

They have hope that change will come someday. They may not know the exact day but that doesn’t curtail their confidence.

Without hope, man cannot live in today for tomorrow. Hope also helps us to keep going when life is tough in the present.

In our theme scripture, Paul the Apostle establishes that we toil and strive, not because of our businesses and our ambitions, but rather because we have hope in God.  Our service in the faith requires total fitness, both physical and spiritual because the fields are white and the labourers are few. We continue to toil and strive, forging ahead each day God gives us because our hope is in Him.

Hope is only as potent as the one who is in charge of hope’s expectations.

Some hope in themselves. Others hope in men or money. You may come across someone whose hope is in his academic credentials. Unfortunately, men can die, money can lose its value and academic certificates can be revoked. Investments can be lost and gifts can fade.

It is only God and His word that abides forever. This is why we hope in God.

Joseph saw his future in a dream God gave to him. He was moved from his father’s house into a pit and yet he kept hope in God. He arrived at Portiphar’s house and he served well and cheerfully because he knew that God can make all things work together for his good. Portiphar’s wife made him an offer. Yet he refused because he found the God who had shown him a greater destiny faithful and would not sin against Him.

Joseph was accused and brought to prison yet he had hope that if God had said it, he would also do it. Though it tarries, he will wait for God to appoint him his time.

Precious One, today there are too many people in Christ who cannot toil through patience to wait on God to appoint them their due season. So, some have gone ahead of God while others are charting their own path without God. Hoping in God is having the assurance that because the unchangeable God lives, you can face tomorrow. It also means having confidence in what God has in store for you tomorrow irrespective of what you are going through today because He is the Savior of all men, especially those who believe. Aren't you blessed to have a God who holds your present and also your future? Just be thankful today that you have the living God with you and in you. In addition, reckon that the suffering and toil of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us (Rom 8:18).

God bless you more.

QUESTION TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD:

1. How can you ensure that God is your only hope in this life?

CONFESSION

Precious Lord, my hope is built on nothing else but the Living God alone. I affirm this day that on Christ the solid Rock I stand; all other ground is sinking sand.  I am at rest each day because of His unchanging grace. When all fail and all is lost, in Christ I will be found secured. Glory to Jesus!
