TOPIC: THE WISDOM TO RECEIVE
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Listen now to me, and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you.” — Exodus 18:19
PREPARATORY QUESTION
- Are you humble enough to receive wisdom from someone God has placed around you, even when you are already doing something well?
After battles are fought and victories are won, another challenge can quietly emerge—fatigue.
In Exodus 18, Moses was faithfully carrying out the responsibility God had given him. From morning until evening, he sat alone judging the disputes of the people. The workload was immense, the line was long, and the burden was becoming unsustainable.
Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, observed what was happening and spoke honestly: “What you are doing is not good.”
His counsel was practical and wise. He encouraged Moses to appoint capable and trustworthy leaders over groups of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens. They would handle the smaller matters, while Moses would focus on the difficult cases and his responsibility before God.
Jethro’s advice was not a call for Moses to abandon his assignment. It was a call to carry it wisely.
Sometimes wisdom is not knowing how to do more, but knowing what should no longer be carried alone.
Moses had been chosen by God, yet he was still willing to listen to another person. His calling did not make him independent of wise counsel. Instead, his humility allowed him to recognize wisdom when it came.
There are moments when we become so focused on our responsibilities that we stop listening. We assume that because God has entrusted something to us, we must handle every part of it ourselves. But God can use people around us to provide perspective, correction, and direction.
Pride isolates. Wisdom listens.
Jethro also helped Moses identify his priorities. Moses was to represent the people before God, teach them God's decrees, and handle the matters that genuinely required his attention. The rest could be entrusted to capable people.
This teaches us an important rhythm:
Seek God for direction.
Listen to wise counsel.
Discern what truly requires your attention.
Delegate what others can faithfully handle.
Remain focused on what God has specifically entrusted to you.
You do not become less valuable because you accept help. Sometimes receiving help is part of fulfilling your assignment well.
Perhaps you have been carrying a responsibility that has left you exhausted. Perhaps someone has offered advice that you were too proud, busy, or defensive to consider. Or perhaps God is showing you that you need to make room for others to contribute.
The question is not whether you can carry everything.
The question is whether you are willing to carry your assignment wisely.

PRAYER
Father, give me the humility to receive wise counsel and the discernment to recognize wisdom when You send it. Guard me from pride and self-reliance. Teach me to manage my responsibilities wisely, to embrace godly partnership, and to remain focused on what You have entrusted to me. Help me to listen, learn, and grow through the people You place around me. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
