TOPIC: SMALL CUP, GREAT REWARD 

THEME SCRIPTURE: "And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward." — Matthew 10:42

1. Have you ever dismissed an act of kindness as "too small to matter"?

 

 

 

Jesus is not describing a grand gesture here. A cup of cold water costs almost nothing. There is no sermon preached, no miracle performed, no sacrifice that draws attention. Yet He attaches the word "verily" to it — His marker for unshakeable, timeless truth.

 

Why would Jesus stake eternal certainty on something so ordinary?

 

Because the value of an act, in God's economy, is not measured by its size but by its source and its aim. The water is cold — cheap, easy to give. But it is given "in the name of a disciple." That phrase changes everything. It is not humanitarian courtesy; it is an act done because the recipient belongs to Christ. The motive transforms the moment.

 

This dismantles a quiet lie many believers carry: that only visible, large-scale service counts before God. Matthew 10:42 says otherwise.Heaven keeps precise records of hidden faithfulness. Nothing done for Christ's sake, however small, evaporates unnoticed. "He shall in no wise lose his reward" is a double negative in the Greek — an emphatic, absolute guarantee. Not "might" receive reward. Cannot lose it.

 

This truth frees us from the exhausting pursuit of significance and replaces it with simple obedience. You don't need a platform to matter to God. You need availability.
