TOPIC: WHEN GOD IS YOUR SHIELD
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.” — Genesis 15:1
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- What is involved if God is your shield?
God’s promise to Abram came immediately after a decisive moment of separation. Yeah, Abram had refused alliance with the king of Sodom, rejecting worldly security, influence, and advantage. In response, God did not merely commend him—He offered Himself: “I am your shield.” The message was clear. Divine protection is greater than political power. God’s reward surpasses material gain.
Though Abram had faith in God, his faith was not silent or emotionless. He had questions.
Abram, in sincerity, questioned God: “What will You give me, since I remain childless?” (Gen. 15:2). This was not rebellion; it was honest anguish. Abram feared that God’s promise of blessing him to be a blessing to the nations might bypass his deepest longing— to have a son. He wondered whether God would fulfill the promise through a servant instead of through him.
This moment reveals something vital: biblical faith allows questions, but not doubt.
Abram brought his uncertainty to God rather than away from God. Augustine captured this well: “Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe.” Abram trusted enough to speak his doubts honestly before the Lord. What about you, precious one?
God did not rebuke Abram’s fear. He clarified the promise, reaffirmed His word, and strengthened Abram’s confidence. John Calvin observed, “Faith does not shut the eyes to difficulties, but looks beyond them to the promise of God.” The Lord patiently meets fragile faith with firm grace.
Many believers face similar tensions today. We refuse certain compromises, choose obedience, and yet wonder if God will truly come through.
Beloved, this is a sure word for you today: Genesis 15 reminds us that God does not replace Himself with substitutes. When He says He is your shield, He is not offering partial protection—He is offering Himself as your security, future, and reward. Throughout the year, be rest assured that God Himself is your Iron Done. He is your exceeding great reward.
Remain blessed.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD
- Where am I tempted to rely on human security instead of God’s protection?
- What unanswered promise am I quietly struggling with?
- Am I bringing my doubts to God or hiding them?
PRAYER
Lord, You are my shield and my reward. Help me trust You above visible support and human strength. Teach me to bring my fears honestly before You and to wait with faith. Strengthen my heart to believe Your promises even when fulfillment seems delayed.. In Jesus’ precious name. Amen.
