TOPIC: THE STRANGER'S VOICE

THEME SCRIPTURE: “They will never follow a stranger; instead, they will run away from him, because they don’t know the voice of strangers.” — John 10:5

PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:

  1. How does the voice of a stranger sound?

Jesus’ words in John 10 remind us of the stark contrast between the voice of the Shepherd and the voices of strangers. The sheep know their Shepherd’s voice—and they flee from any voice that doesn’t sound like His.

This recognition of the Shepherd’s voice isn’t just about auditory recognition; it’s about relational intimacy developed through time and trust.

In our noisy world, many voices compete for our attention—culture’s expectations, fear, pride, temptation, and people’s opinions. These voices may sound persuasive, even comforting at times, but they don’t carry the weight of truth, love, or life. Those who have been with the Shepherd, who walk with Him daily, learn to quickly discern what is false, foreign, or harmful.

A.W. Tozer once said, “The man who would truly know God must give time to Him.” The more we make room for God’s voice in the quiet place, the faster we’ll detect and reject the noise that pulls us away.

Discernment isn’t reserved for the spiritually elite— it’s a fruit of consistent intimacy. We flee not because we’re afraid of the stranger, but because we love the Shepherd too much to follow anyone else.

Beloved, consider these practical steps in daily discerning the Shepherd’s voice:

  • Begin your day by spending some time in silence, but also in prayer before God. Let His voice settle your heart.
  • Filter every inner voice through Scripture: Is this consistent with the Shepherd’s character?
  • Pay attention to what brings peace versus anxiety—God doesn’t drive, He leads.

Precious one, can you tell the voice of the Shepherd from all other voices? How important is the voice of your Lord to you? By consistently studying His word and spending time with the Shepherd, you mature in hearing Him easily and daily.

Remain blessed.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD:

  1. What voices have I been listening to more than the Shepherd’s?
  1. Do I run toward the familiar voice of Christ or tolerate the voice of strangers?

PRAYER

Lord, I want to hear You more clearly. Train my heart to recognize Your voice and run from all that is false. Help me not to be deceived or distracted, but drawn deeper into Your truth and love. In Jesus’  precious name, Amen.
