Andrews Ampomah
TOPIC: Behold Your King.
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” – Zechariah 9:9
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- Is Jesus truly enthroned as King over your life?
Jerusalem, popularly known as the city of God, holds great significance for the people of Israel. It was the center of worship, the dwelling place of God’s glory in the temple (2 Chronicles 6:6), and the seat of David’s throne, from which the Messiah was prophesied to reign (Psalm 48:1-2). Ironically, it was also the city that rejected and killed God’s prophets. Jesus declares: “Nevertheless, I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.’ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it...- Luke 13:33-34.”
In the Old Testament, many prophecies foretold the Messiah’s suffering and death, yet Zechariah also prophesied a moment of triumph: “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey – Zechariah 9:9.”
This prophecy calls Israel to rejoice with shouts at the triumphal entry of their King who comes riding on a donkey. The reason for this call is in the fact that this particular King (who comes not as a conqueror on a warhorse) is not only righteous but carries salvation for His people. The Messiah here brings salvation not only to Israel but also to all humanity
This prophecy was fulfilled centuries later when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, greeted with shouts of "Hosanna!" as people spread palm branches before Him (Matthew 21:8-9).
The triumphal entry was a declaration of the kind of King Jesus is. He came not to conquer by military might but to redeem humanity through sacrifice. His humility led Him to the cross, where He paid the price for our sins, securing eternal salvation for all who believe in Him.
Dearly beloved in Christ, during this Lenten season, let us examine our response to Jesus as King. Do we welcome Him with true devotion or only when it suits our desires? May we not be like those who praised Him one day and rejected Him the next. Instead, may we surrender fully to the reign of our righteous, humble, and saving King! Amen.
