TOPIC: OH, WHAT A GREAT CONSOLATION
THEME SCRIPTURE: “And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger because there was no place for them in the inn…” – Luke 2:7
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- How does Jesus bring true consolation to mankind?
The wait is over! After centuries of longing, prophecies, and silent anticipation, the promised Messiah had finally arrived. The hope of Israel, the desire of nations, and the fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan had come in the form of a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. What a moment of fulfillment! The lyrics of the Presbyterian Hymn No. 115 better express this moment in history:
“All creation, thank the Lord, His Word, He has now fulfilled. The Redeemer for sinners, God has sent into the world. What the men of ancient days, Waited for and longed to see. Prophecies received from God, All fulfilled in Jesus Christ.”
Isn't it amazing how God, in His sovereignty, orchestrates all of creation to align with His divine plan? As the birth of the Messiah drew near, Caesar Augustus issued a decree for a census across the Roman Empire, setting the stage for the prophecy to be fulfilled. With Joseph’s origin from the city of David, he together with his wife went to Bethlehem to be counted. While in Bethlehem and with the prophecy of the Messiah to be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2), Mary’s time was due “And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn – Luke 2:7.” Just like that with no drama and publicity the Savior of the world was born in a humble manger. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Oh, what a wonder! All creation stood still. His unique star appeared. Born in the city of David is the Redeemer whose death will restore humanity to God again. We are told of a righteous and devout man by the name of Simeon who was “…waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him – Luke 2:25.” He was promised no death until his eyes saw the Lord’s Christ. Filled with joy and inspired by the Holy Spirit he declares the assignment of the Messiah “…for my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel – Luke 2:30-32.”
Dearly beloved in Christ, during this Lenten season, remember that the consolation of Israel was not just a hope but a Person—Jesus Christ. He remains our greatest consolation today.
In a world full of uncertainty, pain, and loss, only He offers true and lasting salvation. No burden is too heavy, no sorrow too deep for Him to redeem. He alone has the power to break the chains of the enemy and bring us into His glorious kingdom of light. Have you embraced Him? If not, will you embrace Him today as your Consolation, your Savior, and your greatest hope?
