TOPIC: A CHILD IS BORN; A SON IS GIVEN.
THEME SCRIPTURE: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” – Isaiah 9:6
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- What does the birth of Jesus mean to you personally?
- Why is it significant that Jesus was born as a child and given to us as a son?
In our previous devotional, "Conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the Virgin," we established the dual nature of Jesus Christ—His full humanity and divinity. Today, we delve deeper into the prophecy in Isaiah 9:6: "For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given." These are two statements closely linked but highlight distinct aspects of the Messiah’s identity. Unto us, a child is born, and this speaks of Christ’s humanity. He entered the world like every other person, taking on flesh and experiencing the realities of human life (John 1:14, Philippians 2:7). Unto us a Son is given—this affirms His divinity.
Unlike His human nature, which had a beginning in time, His divine nature is eternal. He was not created but begotten of the Father, existing before all things and being of the same divine essence (Hypostasis) as the Father (John 3:16, Colossians 1:15-17).
Isaiah’s prophecy establishes the foundation of our salvation. If Jesus were merely human, He could not save us; if He were only divine, He could not represent us. But as both God and man, He bridges the gap, offering Himself as the perfect sacrifice for our sins. This is the mystery and beauty of the Incarnation.
Isaiah goes on to tell us other names that confirm His nature and the roles He will play in the lives of the redeemed: “…and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
By the name Wonderful, Isaiah triggers an expectation in the minds of believers to expect something more excellent from the Messiah – that in Christ Jesus are hidden the invaluable treasures of wonderful things (Colossians 2:3). By the name Counsellor. Jesus is not only endowed with absolute wisdom but is in every respect the most perfect Teacher for the saints. By the name Mighty God, Jesus is the embodiment of all power, making it possible for Him to redeem us from Satan’s camp and assuring us that we can rely on Him for eternal security. As Everlasting Father, Jesus is the Author and the source of the church’s existence both now and when we are transitioned into immortality. Prince of Peace denotes the perfection of happiness and prosperity Jesus bestows upon the saints who submit to Him – this is peace that exists in our hearts in struggles and victories.
Dearly beloved in Christ, during the Lenten season, be rest assured that we have such a great High Priest who does not only understand our human struggles but by reason of He being the Son begotten has the power to minister excellent and wonderful things to you; He is perfect in wisdom to teach you and guide through this life in His word; He is mighty and has all power to overcome any situation no matter how bad it seems in your life; He is the source of your existence in this life and eternity and He continually ministers peace and prosperity to His children no matter how chaotic the world seems. Hallelujah!
