TOPIC: WISDOM
THEME SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 4:7-8
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- What is wisdom?
- Have you ever asked yourself – how wise am I?
- How can one acquire wisdom in life?
Wisdom is the most important asset in life, not money. Scripture admonishes that wisdom is the principal thing (the first in terms of time, rank, order, and place). This means, the things we deem as important to our existence should have wisdom occupying the topmost position.
On the other hand, after admonishing that wisdom is the principal thing scripture goes ahead to advise that we also acquire her (wisdom). What is wisdom then?
Wisdom as defined by scripture is simply intellectual or moral insight, or prudence.
When we talk about insight we are referring to the capacity to gain an accurate or deep understanding of something or how something works. Therefore wisdom is simply the capacity to gain an accurate or deep understanding of moral or intellectual issues of life. There are various kinds of wisdom, Precious One. We have majorly God’s wisdom [or heavenly wisdom] - James 3:17 and earthly [or sensual] wisdom (James 3:15).
Scripture points out beautifully that the wisdom of God has these characteristics – it begins with a holy life and getting along with others or being peaceful. It is also gentle and reasonable, overflowing with mercy and goodness to others, devoid of partiality and hypocrisy (James 3:17). There is a reason why someone will choose a holy life rather than a reckless life. It is because that person has an insight [moral or heavenly insight]. Contrary, earthly wisdom is mainly characterized by bitter envying, competitiveness, class systems, vindictiveness, self-centeredness, exploitative, deceiving and cheating one another, etc. (James 3:14-15). All these only satisfy ego and appeals to feelings and nothing more. Those who walk in any of these always end up being the biggest losers in the long run.
The critical question to ask is this: "How can we acquire God's wisdom, you may ask?"
First we must appreciate that the true wisdom of life comes from God. (Prov. 2:6, Exo 31:6). God is the source of true wisdom. Further, we must recognize that God's wisdom is a spirit (Deut 34:9). God's wisdom is a person. Finally, know also that the fear of the Lord is proof that a man has begun his wisdom journey, the Holy Scripture says ( Prov. 9:10). Beloved, having known the above, ask and receive of the Lord His wisdom since He is the source of it. (Luke 21:15). In addition, the holy scriptures are the wisdom of God to mankind therefore let your Bible be your companion in addition to the Holy Spirit (Colossians 3:16) and you will grow in this wisdom.
If wisdom (the God-kind of wisdom / heavenly wisdom) is the most important thing in this life then it must be profitable. What advantages does this wisdom bring?
Just to mention a few:
- Wisdom is stronger than the weapons of war and the might of ten men (Eccl 7:19; Eccl 9:18). With wisdom, a man can conquer the strong and disarm the mighty without struggle.
- Wisdom puts light in the eyes and gives gentleness to words and manners (Eccl 8:1). It is by wisdom a man is deemed honorable and his presence is deemed a solution to the impossible.
- Wisdom makes life easier (Eccl 10:10). Men dissipate strength for no results. But where these is wisdom there is clarity as to the approach for results.
Precious One, don’t underestimate the fact that you have received the grace of our Lord Jesus. This superabundant grace is already powerfully working in you, releasing within you all forms of wisdom and practical understanding. Therefore be conscious of this. Declare today, and every other day, that the wisdom of God is at work in you without measure. You possess the higher wisdom so nothing is too difficult for you. A man of wisdom goes to places. He sits among the great and the mighty. This is why this year you are going forward and upward only. Glory to God!
