TOPIC: THE SOJOURNING CHRISTIAN
THEME SCRIPTURE: “And if you call on the Father, who without respect of persons judges according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear.” – I Peter 1:17
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- How are we to pass our time of sojourning here in fear?
The life of a nomad seems to be one that is constantly on the move. No place is a permanent one. It’s difficult to appreciate a nomadic life. But one thing is clear—wherever you find them at each moment is a transit point. By tomorrow, they would be gone. Every believer, born of God, is a sojourner, just as the men of old and those who have gone ahead of us. We are not natives of the world, though we are in it. Our theme scripture enjoins us to pass our time (or sojourning) here with fear. How are we going to do that?
We are to live with hind knowledge that everyone’s work will be judged.
Apostle Peter states that the One whom we have come to and also called upon is not a respecter of persons. He judges according to every man’s work. The people of the world may not know that there’s an ultimate judgment. Hence, they try to pay their way out of court to avoid justice. But you and I cannot be ignorant. There is a Supreme Judge who will judge both the quick and the dead (Acts 10:42; 1 Tim 4:1). As a child of God, live to be fruitful unto all good works (Col 1:10).
We are to live as the redeemed (1 Peter 1:18-20).
It is important that we live out what we have become in Christ—the redeemed of the Lord. As Apostle Peter points out, we have not been redeemed by the vain conduct received by tradition from our fathers. Neither were we redeemed with corruptible things such as gold and silver (1 Peter 1:18). Even though gold and silver can be passed on from generation to generation, lasting centuries, they are corruptible compared to eternal realities. Our redemption was by blood—that precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish (1 Peter 1:19).
Precious one, we are to live with reverential fear for the King of Kings and His kingdom.
This is not the fear of evil happening to us, but reverence for whose we are, His instructions, and His eminent return. As a sojourner, love not the world, neither the things that are in it. Live your life so that you are ready to give an account of what you have done with it should Jesus come today. Since you are not of this world, you are a citizen of the heavenly kingdom; live to contribute to the expansion of the kingdom on earth. But above all, beloved, live to the glory of God as you pass your time of sojourning here. Remain blessed.

PRAYER
Precious Lord, the life I live, I live by the grace of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. I receive your grace to remain focused on who you are, what I have become in you, and the account of my life at your return, in Jesus’ precious name. Hallelujah!
