TOPIC: WHAT TO DO WHEN IN A FIX

THEME SCRIPTURE: “And Moses said unto the people, Fear not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will show to you this day: for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you shall see them again no more forever.”Exodus 14:13

PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:

  1. What did Moses mean by ‘fear not, stand still…’?

When the children of Israel saw the dust of Pharaoh’s army coming, naturally they were terrified. They began to murmur against God and Moses. This was going to be a recurring practice on the part of Israel—the loss of faith when challenges arise. God, wanting to teach Pharaoh the last lesson, had brought the children of Israel to camp by the Red Sea. Pharaoh, fickle a man that he was, was bent on power. After all he has been through with the ten plagues on his nation, he wouldn’t let go the Israelites.

Moses, hearing the murmuring of the Israelites against him and God because of Pharaoh’s army, gave directions which have proven over the years to help when God’s people are in trouble. In life, there will always be a time in our lives when retreating is cowardice, halting is disastrous and yet it is impossible to go forward. A time we all know that we are in a fix; being between a rock and a hard place.

This is where the children of Israel found themselves—between the devil and the deep blue sea.

Where Israel found herself, God sought to teach, not only Pharaoh a lesson but also His people. Through Moses, God’s instruction to the Hebrews was firstly, ‘Fear not’. It is said that to be human is to know fear. However, to be successful in walking with God is to know no fear. Fear is the enemy of faith, and without faith no man can employ the help of heaven. No wonder, Jesus often rebuked his disciples saying, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” (Mark 4:40).

In challenging times, precious one, maintain your composure in Christ. Do not panic because God is your very present help in times of trouble (Psa 46:1). Maintain confidence in the God of your salvation.

Secondly, Moses admonished, “…stand still.” This could also mean stand firm. Don’t change course or deviate from God’s principle. When Alexander Koom of the Methodist Church during the days of Stalin was asked to merge the church with some denominations or risk being closed. Koom refused, and no matter how hard he was pressed by government officials, he stood his ground. He wouldn’t take an easy way out. Starlin officials asked him, “What is the difference if you take the easy way out to merge with those churches we are comfortable with or we force its closure?” Koom replied, “There is a great difference between the two. If you give me a rope to hang myself and I do, I am responsible. But if you hang me with the rope then you are responsible and you will not go unaccountable.”

Koom was sent into Siberan exile and the Methodist church grew stronger than ever because Koom’s faith challenged them. After 5 years, Koom was released miraculously from prison.

Beloved, stand still; God’s help is on the way for you. See His salvation coming because He who keeps Israel never sleeps nor slumber (Psa 121:4). The Egyptians you see today,n you shall see them no more forever. Remain blessed.
