TOPIC: THE PROBLEM OF INSECURITY
THEME SCRIPTURE: “And Abraham said, because I thought, surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife’s sake.” – Genesis 20:11
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- Why did Abraham put himself in trouble by saying his wife is the sister?
- What might have happened if God had not intervened?
Even though it took Saul, David, and Solomon approximately 120 years to forge the kingdom of Israel, it took few years to split it. The kingdom was torn into two (1 Kings 12:19–20), by the wanting-power (1 Kings 12:13–14) of a weak man (Rehoboam) and the insecurity (1 Kings 12:26–30) of a privileged man (Jeroboam). The kingdom did not remain the same again, all due to one man"s insecurity.
Insecurity has a way of breeding false fear and curtailing our strategic mental powers. Where insecurity is, there also sin and iniquity flourish.
Abraham had not dealt with his insecurity. He knew the wife was beautiful—a woman kings and princes would want. But his fears brought him to the point where he assumed others might kill him to have his wife. This fear has been with him since Abraham and Sarah set off from Ur to Canaan (Gen 12:13). Being almost 100 years old, Abraham had not dealt with his insecurity. Yet this is the same man who, by faith, set out from Ur to an unknown place that God promised to show him and also give him (Heb 11:8). This is the man who, in faith, conquered kings and rescued his nephew Lot with only 318 men trained in his house (Gen 14:14–15). This same Abraham stood before God and negotiated for the sparing of Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen 18:23–25).
Precious one, never underestimate your insecurity if it is there in you. It is an enemy that can deal you a blow to your daze.
Goliath underestimated David, and he paid for it. Eve underestimated the serpent, which she regretted afterwards. Chamberlain underestimated Hitler, and the Americans underestimated the Vietnamese, and the consequences were felt in full. Insecurity emerges when we see ourselves as less of what God has made us (low self-esteem) or, like in the case of Jeroboam, as being undeservingly privileged. In the case of Abraham, competitors made him very uncomfortable. People who are insecure always suffer from spiritual amnesia or myopia. They easily forget the promises of God, being preoccupied with their insecurity. They are not able to see beyond themselves. Abraham nearly lost Sarah to Abimelech, had it not been for the intervention of God (Gen 20:3-5). Are you thinking you’re not attractive because you are yet to marry? Or has society told you many times that you’re not good enough? Are you unsure of how your children or marriage will turn out? Are you afraid of what the future holds for you? Behold this:
To kill insecurity, set your gaze on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Heb 12:1).
If you take your eyes off Him, your fears and concerns will multiply. Evaluate your life and capabilities in the light of your union with Christ. Your spiritual roots go deeply into His life, as you are infused with strength and wisdom to do all things. Live supreme; live like the darling of Jehovah, and every negative concern will disappear. God bless you more.

CONFESSION
Precious Lord, you are my life and my length of days. I am fearfully and wonderfully made. God’s word assures me that, as a lover of God and one who is called by His grace, all things work together for my good. Therefore, I have no fear today or tomorrow. I am secured in Him. Glory to God!
