TOPIC: TRUTH LEADS TO GODLINESS

THEME SCRIPTURE: “Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness.” – Titus 1:1

PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:

  1. What is truth?
  2. Is truth and godliness related?

What is truth?

The most important question every person alive must answer is this simple but daunting question: "What is truth?" Every life that will be well lived must be lived according to the truth. It is like going to school, and after completion, you realise that all that you have been taught is outdated. You would begin to wonder about the relevance of what you know.

A life that is lived outside of truth is a life lived in falsehood.

In our theme scripture, Apostle Paul wrote to Titus (who was then in Crete to bring some order and direction to the churches there), purposely “to further the faith of God’s elect in Crete and to lead them to the full acknowledgement of the truth that leads to godliness.” God’s word is truth (John 17:17), signifying that truth is what God says and proceeds from God. This is why truth will lead to godliness.

Godliness here is not necessarily piety but an expression of the character of God in everyday living.

Such that if God is love, it is godly to express love. If God is merciful, it is godly to express mercy. Is God patient, kind, and longsuffering? Sure, He is. It is therefore godly to express patience, longsuffering, and kindness. We are called upon to reflect the nature of God through our devotion and obedience to Christ. It is only the truth (God’s word) that can bring us to the place of godliness.

Beloved, any truth that does not engender godliness is not real truth. Any “new order” that departs from God’s word is not truth. Godliness is not an achievement; it is a way of life that flows from a relationship with God (whose word is truth). Jesus said to Pilate, “Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.” (John 18:36). Pilate followed up with a question: “What is truth?” (John 18:37). Without waiting for the answer, he walked away. He had no value for the truth.

In the end, precious one, in the end, everything will fall. But the truth will stand tall.

The grass withers, and the flower thereof falls away. But the word of the Lord endures forever. And this is the word (truth) which by the gospel is preached unto you” (1 Peter 1:24–25). Neglect the word of God, and you have neglected the truth. Avoid the instructions of truth, and you have picked your own pocket. What must you do then? “Buy the truth, and sell it not” (Prov 23:23). Live in the truth, and He will bring you to the place of godliness. God bless you more.
