TOPIC: GOD IS LIGHT

THEME SCRIPTURE: “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all” – 1 John 1:5

PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:

  1. What does it mean to say God is light?
  2. Is there no darkness at all in God?

Throughout scripture, the truth of Jesus Christ has been passed on from one generation to the other. It began with the apostles who were with Jesus. The messages which they heard were passed on to other believers through epistles to the early churches. This has continued to our days. John the Beloved, in our theme scripture, shares the message of Christ, so simple and yet so clear-God is light, and in Him is no darkness. As Blaise Pascal will put it: “Jesus Christ said great things so simply, that it seems as though He had not thought them great; and yet so clearly that we easily see what He thought of them. This clearness, joined to this simplicity, is wonderful.”

Precious One, God is light, and in Him is no darkness. By this profound statement John points out what God is, and what He is not. Every great and positive truth has its negative implication as well. For instance, if Jesus is Lord, then you are not Lord. Therefore, if God is light, then He is not darkness (and neither can there be any darkness in Him). To the Hebrews, the quintessential nature of God was light. “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light”, Isaiah declared (Isa. 9:2). David also declared, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light to my path” (Ps 119:105). Thus, light is a representation of that which is perfect, way-maker and deliverer to those in darkness (or unfavorable circumstances).

God is light, the most perfect of all in existence. His ways are perfect and true. He cannot make a mistake, and neither can a mistake be attributed to Him. Therefore, know for sure that you are not a mistake in this life because the perfect God created you. It doesn’t matter which continent you find yourself today; it is not a mistake. God gave you those parents; it is not a mistake. He made you male or female? It is not a mistake. Are you colored or white, short or tall, thick or thin? A perfect God made you this perfect. Rejoice forever more, who you are and how God has made you.

God is light, the way-maker; the revealer of the path of righteousness. There is a way that seems right to a man but its end is the way to death (Prov 14:12). Man’s knowledge is limited to the “now”. But God is all-knowing. He declares the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done. This is why “His counsel is what shall stand” (Isa 46:10) in your life.

God is light, beloved, and the deliverer of mankind. All of us, like sheep, have gone astray. We were appointed to death by reason of our sins. It was God who gave His only begotten Son (John 3:16), to rescue us from the tyrannical rule of darkness (1 Peter 2:9). Now, we live in the marvelous light of His dear Son.

Brethren, in God is no darkness at all. If He allows you to go through tough times, it is for a perfect reason. If he seems to delay, it is for a perfect reason. There is no darkness at all in Him; it will all work out together for your good. God bless you more.

QUESTION TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD:

  1. How have you seen God all these years, and your confidence in all that He has allowed or disallowed in your life?

CONFESSION

Precious Father, I acknowledge you as my God; perfect in all your ways. Your ways are not my ways, Lord. Yet your plans towards me are plans of peace and not of evil, to give me an expected end.
