TOPIC: FOCUS ON THINGS ABOVE
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” – Colossians 3:2
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- What affections must we set on things above?
- Why must we set our affections on things above?
In life, knowing what has value is the key to success. Therefore, the end of a matter is better than the beginning (Eccl 7:8). As God’s people, the things we set our desires on will determine whether we will live a pleasing and fulfilling life. This is why our theme scripture admonishes that we set our affection on things above (heavenly) and not things below.
Beloved, many things are vying for our attention and desires. However, not all are worth our desires and attention. Such things as career, money, social media, parties, funerals, academic laurels, etc. So, if you haven't been intentional about your priorities in life, now is the time.
Set your desires on things above, because you are from above.
“The first man [Adam] was of the earth, earthy; the second man is the Lord from heaven”, Paul pointed out (1 Cor 15:47). However, he went ahead to reveal that, “As is the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly [man], so are those who are of heaven” (1 Cor 15:48). This means you, “being born again, not of corruptible seed but of incorruptible of the word of God, who lives and abides forever” (1 Pet 1:23), are from above. You are of the second man, the Lord from heaven.
Set your affections on things above because you are a pilgrim here.
Precious one, you don’t belong here. You can't live like Earth is your destination. The believer is here temporarily. We are here to fulfil an assignment. We can’t lose sight of the assignment or the final destination. This is why Jesus told us, “In my Father’s house are many mansions... And I go to prepare a place for you… so that where I am, there you may also be.” (John 14:2-3).
Set your affection on things above because it is appointed for man once to die and, after death, judgment (Heb 9:27).
Precious one, everyone will give an account of what he or she used his or her life for (Rom 14:12). Only eternal things will count when we stand before God. Do you know the things that have eternal value? Nothing should be of value to you more than this: “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and its righteousness, and all other things [including the temporal and non-eternal] shall be added unto you” (Matt 6:33).
Beloved, focus is the womb of accomplishment. Jesus is coming again.
Are you looking forward to the return of your Savior? Set your affection on Jesus, who is returning soon to judge the living and the dead. Only this way can we be ready when He comes. God bless you more.

CONFESSION
I affirm that I am from above and not from beneath. I am empowered to think heavenly and live for God’s kingdom. My desire is God and my focus is His righteousness. I do not live for the mere sake of prolonging existence. I live for the King. Glory to God.
