TOPIC: MORE THAN YOU KNOW 

THEME SCRIPTURE: "Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us."—Ephesians 3:20  

 

PREPARATORY QUESTION 

1. Do you actually believe you carry more capacity than you're currently operating in — or have you settled for less because it feels safer?

 

 

Most believers underestimate themselves, not out of humility, but out of unfamiliarity with what's actually been given to them. We treat the Christian life as primarily about restraint — what to avoid, what to resist — and rarely stop to reckon with what we've been equipped to do. Paul's prayer for the Ephesians wasn't for their survival. It was for them to grasp the scale of power already at work inside them.

This isn't a call to arrogance. It's a call to accuracy. When Jesus told his disciples they would do "greater things" than they'd seen him do, he wasn't offering hyperbole — he was describing the effect of the Spirit's indwelling. The same power that raised Christ from the dead is described, plainly, as living in you (Romans 8:11). That's not a metaphor to admire from a distance. It's a resource to actually draw from.

Consider the gifts scattered throughout Scripture — wisdom, discernment, healing, teaching, leadership, mercy exercised with unusual capacity. These aren't reserved for a spiritual elite. They're distributed, according to Paul, to "each one" for the common good. Somewhere in you is a grace you haven't fully located yet, because you've never had the confidence to test it.

The real danger isn't overreach. It's underuse. It's living defensively — managing sin, avoiding failure — while the authority to actually build something, heal someone, or carry weight you thought was too heavy sits unclaimed. Love, too, operates this way. The love of God poured into our hearts (Romans 5:5) isn't a sentiment to feel. It's a force capable of absorbing offense, extending forgiveness, and outlasting what should have ended the relationship.

You were not given a spirit of timidity. You were given power, love, and a sound mind — and most of it is still waiting to be used.

PRAYER 

Father, forgive me for underestimating what you've placed in me. Awaken me to the authority, gifts, and love you've given through your Spirit. Give me courage to walk in capacity, not caution, and to love others with the same power that raised Christ from the dead. In Jesus' precious name, Amen.
