TOPIC: WHEN GOD'S TRUTH CREATES DIVISION

THEME SCRIPTURE: “I came not to send peace, but a sword.” — Matthew 10:34 KJV

PREPARATORY QUESTION 

1. When loyalty to Christ conflicts with the expectations of people you love, whom will you choose?

Jesus’ words in Matthew 10:34 can sound surprising. He is the Prince of Peace, yet He says He came not to send peace, but a sword. He was not commanding His followers to create conflict. Rather, He was warning them that His truth would sometimes create division.

The gospel demands a decision. Christ calls people to repentance, obedience, and a new way of living. Not everyone will welcome that call. Sometimes the strongest resistance can come from those closest to us.

Family relationships are valuable, but they must never become more important than our relationship with Christ. Jesus is not asking us to despise our families; He is asking us to establish the right order of loyalty. When family expectations contradict God's Word, discipleship requires courage to choose Christ.

This can be costly. You may be misunderstood because you refuse dishonest practices. You may be criticized because your convictions differ from those around you. You may even experience rejection because you will not compromise your faith.

Yet faithfulness does not require hostility. We can stand firmly for Christ while remaining gracious toward those who disagree with us. We do not need to attack people to defend truth.

The question is not whether following Christ will always preserve every relationship exactly as it is. The question is whether Christ remains first when following Him becomes costly.

PRAYER 

Father, give me grace to put Christ first in every area of my life. When following You creates tension, give me courage without hostility and conviction without pride. Help me love my family and others sincerely while remaining faithful to Your Word. May nothing become more important to me than obedience to Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
