TOPIC: RECEIVING AUTHORITY IN CHRIST

THEME SCRIPTURE: "And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: Whosoever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained." —John 20:22-23 

 

PREPARATORY QUESTION 

1. Do you truly believe that Christ has entrusted you with real spiritual authority, or do you live as if a one searching for authority?

 

 

 

After the resurrection, Jesus did something remarkable. He didn't just comfort His disciples — He breathed on them. That breath carried power. It was the moment the Holy Spirit was given, and with that gift came a weighty responsibility: authority over sin, forgiveness, and reconciliation.

This wasn't a ceremonial gesture. Jesus was transferring something real. The disciples, ordinary men who had recently abandoned Him in fear, were now commissioned to carry forward the very work of redemption — declaring forgiveness, confronting sin, restoring broken relationships between people and God.

That same breath reaches you today. If you belong to Christ, you are not a bystander in His kingdom. You carry the Spirit. You have a role in whether peace or bondage spreads in the lives around you — through the words you speak, the grace you extend, or the truth you withhold.

Too many believers underestimate this. We treat forgiveness as merely emotional, something we do to feel better. But Scripture frames it as authority — a spiritual reality with consequences. When you forgive, heaven agrees. When you release someone from what they owe you, chains break — sometimes theirs, sometimes yours.

This is not permission for carelessness. Retaining sin isn't about grudges; it's about naming what's real, calling people toward repentance rather than pretending brokenness doesn't exist. Authority requires discernment, not convenience.

PRAYER 

Father, thank You for trusting me with authority I did not earn. Teach me to forgive as You forgive — freely, but not carelessly. Give me courage to speak truth where it's needed and grace to release what I've been holding onto. Let Your peace move through me today, into every relationship I touch. In Jesus' name, Amen.
