TOPIC: LIFTED HANDS

THEME SCRIPTURE:  “And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.” — Exodus 17:11

PREPARATORY QUESTION

  1. How were the lifted hands of Moses shaping the battle between Amalek and Israel in Rephidim?

In Exodus 17, immediately after water flowed from the rock, a new challenge appeared. Amalek came and attacked Israel at Rephidim at a time when they were weary. And so, weariness met warfare.

This was not a hunger problem.

It was not a thirst problem.

It was opposition.

Moses instructed Joshua to choose men and go fight, while he stood on the hill with the staff of God in his hands.

As long as Moses held up his hands, Israel prevailed. When his hands grew tired and lowered, Amalek gained ground. Victory was connected to lifted hands.

Notice the partnership: Joshua fought in the valley. Moses stood on the hill. Aaron and Hur supported his arms when he grew weary. God could have defeated Amalek instantly— but instead, He invited participation, perseverance, and community.

The staff once stretched over the sea. It struck the rock. Now it was raised in intercession. The same symbol of God’s authority became a banner of dependence.

Battles are often won not merely through effort—but through sustained reliance on God.

Moses grew tired. Even leaders grow tired. Even faithful people feel the weight of prolonged struggle. The difference was not in his strength but in his support.  Aaron and Hur placed a stone beneath him and held up his hands until sunset.

Sometimes victory requires endurance.

Sometimes endurance requires help.

After the battle, Moses built an altar and called it “The Lord is my Banner.” The name declared a truth: their identity and victory were not rooted in military power—but in God’s covering presence.

You may be in a battle season right now. You may be having an opposition unexpected after a divine provision. But the rhythm remains: dependence, obedience, participation.

Key Takeaway

Victory is sustained through dependence.

Lifted hands invite God’s power into life’s battles.

Beloved, as you go through the day, lift up your hands—whether literally in prayer or figuratively in surrender. Stand your ground. Seek God’s strength. Welcome support.

The battle may be fierce, but it is not yours alone.

Remain blessed.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD.

  1. What battle am I currently facing?
  1. Have I been trying to fight in my own strength?
  1. Who are the “Aaron and Hur” in my life who help hold up my arms?
  1. How can I actively lift my hands in prayer today?

PRAYER

Lord, You are my Banner. When I grow weary in battle, remind me that victory flows from Your strength, not mine. Teach me to depend on You and to receive support from others. Help me stand firm until the battle passes. Amen.
