TOPIC: WHEN TRUTH IS TREATED AS TREASON
THEME SCRIPTURE: “So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the king's son, which was in the court of the prison, and they let Jeremiah down with ropes. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire. So Jeremiah sank in the mire.” — Jeremiah 38:6 NKJV
PREPARATORY QUESTION
- What makes people hate the hard truth?
After rejecting Jeremiah’s prophetic message, Zedekiah’s officials took matters further—they threw the prophet into a muddy cistern or well. They believed that if they silenced the messenger, they could silence the message. But truth has never been defeated by mistreatment. It simply waits, rises, and speaks again.
Jeremiah sank into the mud—not because he was wrong, but because he was right.
When truth is unwelcome, it is often labeled as rebellion. When obedience is determined, it is often misinterpreted as stubbornness. When faithfulness challenges the status quo, it is often treated as disruption.
Yet notice God’s quiet, sovereign care. Into a scene of cruelty, He sends an unexpected rescuer: Ebed-Melech, an Ethiopian foreigner, an outsider with more spiritual clarity than the king and his leaders. While Israel’s leaders suppressed the truth, a stranger honored it.
Ebed-Melech risked political backlash to defend a righteous man. He pulled Jeremiah out with ropes and rags—gentle strength, compassionate courage.
Gregory the Great wrote, “Truth is lost when compassion is lost. Mercy guards the truth as a mother guards her child.” God preserved both His prophet and His word through someone who valued integrity more than safety.
This moment reveals something profound: Truth may be opposed, buried, or ridiculed, but God will always raise it up—and He often uses surprising people to do it.
Sometimes God allows His faithful ones to descend into “cistern seasons” —places where they feel stuck, unheard, or misunderstood. Not because they’ve failed, but because they’ve been faithful in bearing the truth. Yet the same God who allowed Jeremiah to descend also orchestrated his lifting. Truth-bearers are never abandoned.
The world may misjudge them, but heaven vindicates them. As Tertullian said, “We are not born for ourselves alone… the truth we carry is for the life of the world.” And that is why heaven will always vindicate truth bearers.
Precious one, remain faithful to God’s truth even when it costs you reputation, comfort, or safety. God has already prepared the ropes that will lift you out.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD
- When have I felt “in the cistern” because of obedience to God?
- Do I value truth enough to defend it—even when doing so is unpopular?
- Who has God unexpectedly used in my life to lift, rescue, or affirm truth?
- How can I be an “Ebed-Melech” to someone who is standing for truth today?
PRAYER
Lord, I receive strength to be resolved, to stand for truth even when it costs me. When I feel stuck or misunderstood, remind me that You see, You sustain, and You send help. I receive courage like Ebed-Melech and steadfastness like Jeremiah. Lift me from every muddy place and use my life as a witness to Your unchanging truth. In Jesus’ precious name. Amen.
