TOPIC: RISING ABOVE THE FEAR
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goes.” - Joshua 1:9 (KJV)
PREPARATORY QUESTION
1. Fear is a terrible thing. How can the believer in Christ live above fear and discouragement?
After Moses’ death, Joshua faced an overwhelming call—to lead Israel into the Promised Land. The task was monumental, the people restless, and the obstacles formidable. Yet God’s charge was clear and repeated: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9).
Courage does not mean the absence of fear; it means moving forward despite it.
Fear is often faith in the wrong direction—it magnifies what might go wrong instead of who God is. Joshua’s success depended not on military skill, but on spiritual steadfastness— his willingness to act on God’s word, not on his emotion.
The command “Be strong and courageous” was not self-generated optimism; it was rooted in divine presence. God was saying, “You can move because I’m with you.” As Martin Luther once said, “Faith is a living, daring confidence in God’s grace, so sure and certain that it would risk a thousand deaths.”
Fear often paralyzes what faith can energize. When we focus on our inadequacy, we forget the sufficiency of God.
God never sends His people into battle alone. Each act of obedience backed by divine presence becomes unstoppable.
God’s call to Joshua mirrors His call to every believer facing a new season, a daunting challenge, or a risky step of faith. The same Spirit that empowered Joshua now dwells in you. “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7).
How can we love above the spirit of fear?
- Face What You Fear. Name your fear before God— pray honesty, breaking its hold.
- Anchor in the Word. Like Joshua, meditate daily on God’s promises (Joshua 1:8). Let truth outweigh emotion.
- Take Courageous Action. Act even while afraid; courage is formed in motion, not when lying down meditating.
- Remember His Presence. Keep reminding yourself: “The Lord my God is with me wherever I go.”
You may not feel ready, but readiness is rarely about resources—it’s about reliance. The question is not, “Can I?” but “Will I trust Him enough to make a move?”
Remain blessed.

PRAYER
Lord, You know how fear often whispers louder than faith. But today, I choose to rise above fear by trusting in Your presence and power.
