TOPIC: SHADOWS OVER THE LIGHT
THEME SCRIPTURE: “The fourth angel blew his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, and a third of the moon and a third of the stars, so that a third of their light might be darkened, and a third of the day might be kept from shining, and likewise a third of the night." (Revelation 8:12)
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- What happens when the fourth trumpet of the seventh seal is blown?
The first three trumpets tore through the earth, sea, and springs—now the heavens are struck. The light that governs day and night, the rhythms that sustain life, are dimmed. This is not full darkness, but a third. Enough to unsettle. Enough to disorient. Enough to remind us how dependent we are on what we never created.
Throughout Scripture, light represents God’s presence, truth, and direction. Darkness, then, signals judgment, confusion, and divine withdrawal. Jesus warned in John 12:35, “Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you.” The fourth trumpet is the beginning of that overtaking.
This is not nature collapsing on its own—it is God actively disrupting the created order. Just as He once darkened Egypt (Exodus 10:21–23), here He warns a rebellious world: if you reject the Light, I will let you feel its absence.
Gregory the Great once wrote, “The greater the light rejected, the deeper the darkness embraced.” The judgment here is poetic and tragic—humanity spurned the Light of the World, and now the natural lights fade. The warning is spiritual: if we continue to love darkness rather than light (John 3:19), we will one day find ourselves unable to see at all.
To the righteous: this trumpet speaks both warning and encouragement. When the world grows darker, let your light shine all the more.
Philippians 2:15 urges us to “shine like stars in a crooked and twisted generation.” You were not made for Twilight—you were made for the day. Do not fear the dimming. You carry within you the light of Christ, and His light is not diminished by cosmic shadows.
To the unrighteous: the darkness is not total—yet. There is still time. God’s restraint is mercy. A third is struck, not all. You still see. You still breathe. You still choose. Do not waste the warning light.
Augustine reminded the Church: “God has made us for Himself, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in Him.” The light dims so that we might finally look for its true Source.
Let today be a return to the Light. Read His Word. Reflect His truth. Refuse to walk in the shadows.
Remember: Jesus is coming again.
