TOPIC: SARDIS: AWAKENING THE DEAD CHURCH

THEME SCRIPTURE: “You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead.” — Revelation 3:1 (ESV)

PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:

1. How can one be alive yet dead?

The Sardis church did not receive a commendation from the Lord, as He did with the others. The church in Sardis appeared vibrant outwardly but was spiritually lifeless. The church was Christian in name only.

There are four pieces of evidence of spiritual life in a church or the life of a believer.

In a living church or believer, there will be continuous growth, compassion, unity, and love. All these were absent in Sardis.

The Sardis church had become like the fruitless fig tree. Of what use is the fig tree to abate hunger when it bears more leaves but no fruits?

Sardis was a church that went through the motions, but the Spirit of God was not in anything they did. They went about the formalities of worship, but their hearts were far from God. They were unprofitable to the kingdom of God.

A remnant in Sardis remained faithful. If you are among those pursuing genuine and intimate faith, continue to seek deeper intimacy with Christ. Your perseverance is not in vain.

If your faith has become routine or superficial, heed Christ's warning. Repent, strengthen what remains, and rekindle your passion for Him.

O, our God, quicken us once again...
