THEME: POURED OUT AND PIERCED
THEME SCRIPTURE: “I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast; For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet.” – Psalm 22:14 and 16
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- How does understanding Christ’s suffering deepen your appreciation of His sacrifice?
- What does Jesus’ suffering mean for your faith today?
In our focus text, David, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, prophesied in Psalm 22 about the Messiah’s suffering with some specific details. Centuries before crucifixion was even practiced, the Psalmist describes the physical and emotional agony of Christ on the cross. "I am poured out like water – Psalm 22:14" speaks of Jesus's utter exhaustion as His strength drained away. “All my bones are out of joint" aligns with the gruesome reality of crucifixion, where the victim’s body hangs in unbearable pain. “My heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast” reflects the crushing sorrow He bore—not just from physical suffering but from carrying the weight of the world's sin.
David’s prophecy emphasizes that the Messiah will experience complete physical weakness, identifying fully with human frailty.
In verse 16 of Psalm 22, David foretells the brutal piercing of His hands and feet: “…They have pierced my hands and feet”—a precise foreshadowing of crucifixion which was fulfilled when Thomas saw the marks in the risen Lord’s body.
Dearly beloved in Christ, the vivid details of the Messiah’s suffering remind us of the depth of His love—He willingly endured it all so that we might be free from sin’s penalty, which is death. Every wound, every moment of agony, was the price He paid for our redemption.
It is expedient at this point to remind ourselves that Lent is a sacred season of reflection, repentance, and renewed devotion as we journey toward the cross and the grave.
As we journey through this Lenten season, let us not take His sacrifice for granted. Though our salvation is freely given, it came at an unfathomable cost to Jesus. How then should we respond to such love? Let us live in gratitude, surrender, renewed devotion and deeper faith to the One who gave His all for us.
God bless you
