TOPIC: WHEN MOCKERY PAVES WAY FOR MAJESTY
THEME SCRIPTURE: “But I am a worm and no man… They mock me… ‘He trusts in the Lord; let the Lord rescue him!’" ~ Psalm 22:6-8, NKJV
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
1. How are Christians supposed to deal with mockery in their journey?
Jake, a college athlete, faced jeers when he knelt to pray before games. Teammates sneered, “If your God’s real, why’s your knee still injured?” Their taunts mirrored Psalm 22:8—the same words hurled at Jesus on the cross (Matthew 27:43). Jake’s doubt surged: “Does God even care?”
Yet, in his isolation, he discovered a profound truth: Christ’s suffering sanctifies ours.
Psalm 22 vividly foreshadows Jesus’ crucifixion. The “worm” (Psa 22:6) symbolizes both humiliation (worms feast on the dead) and crimson dye (used for royalty)—a paradox pointing to Christ: crucified as a criminal, yet crowned as King. The mockery (Psa 22:8) became reality as bystanders scoffed, “He saved others; he cannot save himself!” (Mark 15:31).
Beloved, why did God allow this?
Theologian R.C. Sproul explains: “Christ’s suffering was not defeat—it was the means of victory.” Jesus embraced shame to dismantle sin’s power (Hebrews 12:2). Glory to God.
Precious one, when you're mocked for your faith, remember these truths:
Remember that you are seen. Jesus, “despised and rejected” (Isaiah 53:3), understands ridicule. As Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote, “God does not give us answers—He gives us Himself.” Your pain is held by a Savior who bore worse.
Additionally, remember that mockery doesn’t define you. The crowd labeled Jesus a fraud, but God declared Him “My Beloved Son” (Matthew 3:17).
Jake’s identity wasn’t in his knee healing but in his Healer.
Finally, remember--Redemption Follows Suffering. Psalm 22 shifts from agony to praise (Psa 22: 22-24). The cross led to resurrection; your trials have an expiration date.
Jake’s knee never fully healed, but his faith did. God used that same knee to win many more games it baffled those with strong knees. Later, Jake started a campus prayer group, reminding others: “Jesus was mocked so we’d never be alone in ours.”
The world mocked a “worm”—but the Worm became the Conqueror (Revelation 5:5). Hold fast: Your Conqueror is giving you a conquest.
Remain blessed.
