TOPIC: THE WORD OF LIFE
THEME SCRIPTURE: That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled of the Word of Life – 1 John 1:1
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- What did John mean by “The Word of Life”?
As the words of our theme scripture begin, we are reminded of the prologue to the gospel of John, as well as the opening lines of the Book of Genesis 1 “In the beginning.” The writer, John, points out to us that before time began, there existed the Word. He continued to show that they had heard the Word, seen with their optical eyes and looked upon this Word. Then he adds that they had also handled (experienced) the Word. This Word is no ordinary word but the Word of Life.
What is this Word and why is it referred to as the Word of Life?
Beloved, the Word of Life is also the word of God. In this Word is the life eternal (the indestructible life, the life of God) who existed with the Father before time. This Word of life is incorruptible, and He is the source and seed of the new generation of the God-kind (1 Peter 1:23). Further, we understand that the worlds were framed by this Word, such that the material world and everything in it did not come from anything visible (Heb 11:3).
The Word of life is the true light who lights every man who comes into the world (John 1:9).
Without the Word, how can we have a real or a true experience and exposure in this life? This light shines in the dark and every darkness [of ignorance, struggle, bondage] disperses (John 1:5). David understood this reality and confessed, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psa 119:105). It is only by the Word that we can be truly guided in this life to the greater and superior destiny which can, and must be ours.
Interestingly, the Word became flesh (or took on human nature) and He lived and walked on this terrestrial globe (John 1:14). Really? How can we ascertain that this is true? Beloved, there was a man sent from God whose name was John the Baptist (John 1:6). This John came to bear witness of this Word of Life so that all men through him might believe (John 1:7).
Precious one, this Word of Life is Jesus. This Word of Life is God.
It does not matter who you are or where you are from. It does not matter your self-opinion, until you meet Jesus, the Word of Life, you have not begun to live. Without Jesus, you are far from God’s life; you are already condemned. Jesus is the light of the world. The one who follows Him shall not walk in darkness (John 8:12). But he will have the light of life. Beloved, have you received the Word of Life? Are you following the light of life? Is Jesus your true companion in your pilgrimage here? He came purposely that you and me might have life and have it more abundantly. Stay with the Word all your days and you wil see the light of His glory. Remain blessed.
