TOPIC: BE INNER-DIRECTED
THEME SCRIPTURE: And He said to them, Go and tell that fox, behold, I cast out devils, and I do cure today and tomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected. – Luke 13:32
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- Why did Jesus send that His plans be told to King Herod?
Now, Elijah, by the power of God, had brought down fire from heaven to consume his sacrifice. Elijah was one man, and he was pitched against the prophets of Baal numbering 450 (1 Kings 18:19) yet he demonstrated that he and God are the majority. Elijah further ended the three and a half years of drought (1 Kings 18:44-45). However, when Ahab narrated to his wife Jezebel how Elijah had brought down fire and also slain all the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 19:1), she was not amused.
Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah with these words: “So let the gods do to me and more also if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time” (1 Kings 19:2). At hearing of the threat of Jezebel, Elijah got afraid and began to run for his life (1 Kings 19:3). Thus, the threatening finger of Jezebel set Elijah on a course he had not chosen, planned, or been directed by God.
It was in the cave of Horeb that God found Elijah and questioned him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” (1 Kings 19:9).
Similarly, certain of the Pharisees came to Jesus to tell him to get out of Jerusalem because Herod would kill him (Luke 13:31). But Jesus refused to let Herod’s action determine his direction. Hence, He sent a reply to Herod (the fox) that he is not the one who will determine his agenda but the Spirit of God. Jesus sent to tell Herod that He was casting out devils today and curing the sick today as well. The next day, he will continue the work of God in Jerusalem and will be perfected on the third day. This is remarkable.
“To know what you prefer instead of humbly saying ‘Amen’ to what the world tells you, is to have kept your soul alive,” says Robert Louis Stevenson.
Beloved, men cannot determine our goals and directions in this life. We are no longer dancing to the drumming and tunes of this world but to God, the Divine drummer. Many of God’s children are guilty of living by the directions of others, economic situations, and fear of the future. Often, we try to fit in, make it, or be right with the crowd. How rare are those who are constantly asking God, “Lord, what will you have me do at this time?”
Precious one, it is wonderful to be inner-directed, when you allow the Spirit’s still small voice within to direct your path.
It is awesome when we allow the word of God to be a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Ps 119:105). Elijah was redirected out of the cave of Horeb to the wilderness of Damascus to anoint the next king of Syria, the next king of Israel, and the prophet to occupy his office (1 Kings 19:15–16). We will never get it wrong when we walk with the Lord (rather than what we hear in the world) in the light of His word. What a glory He [God] sheds on our way. Be inner-directed, and you will make progress all your days. Remain blessed.

QUESTION TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD:
- How conscious do you seek the mind of God regarding your plans and life’s direction?
CONFESSION
Precious Spirit of God, without you I can do nothing. Many are the plans of a man but it is the counsel of Jehovah that shall stand. Precious Spirit, make your counsel plain to me regarding my plans and programs, my directions and my ways. I receive grace to walk with you all my days. Glory Hallelujah!
