TOPIC: SCRIPTURE ALONE
THEME SCRIPTURE: “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” – 2 Timothy 3:16
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- What value do you place on God’s Word?
The Protestant Reformation was defined by its commitment to the Bible as the ultimate source of truth and authority. This theological doctrine, known as sola scriptura, was a dramatic departure from the established tradition of relying on church authority and tradition. The Reformers emphasized the Bible as the infallible and inerrant Word of God, and the Reformation's legacy includes a renewed focus on the Scriptures.
Unfortunately, in modern times, there is a growing danger of neglecting the Bible and instead relying on the words of men, traditions, and personal feelings.
In his anticipation of the events of the last days, Paul forewarns Timothy to adopt a steadfast pattern of conduct to counteract the prevailing evil. Paul urges him to persist in the teachings he has embraced and believed in. Paul also reflects on Timothy's early days as a Christian when he became well-acquainted with the sacred Scriptures (2 Tim 3:14-15). He further expounds on the origin and significance of these sacred writings, stating: “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work (2 Tim 3:16-17).
Paul emphasizes the divine origin of the Bible, explaining that it is "breathed out by God."
While it was documented by holy men who received divine inspiration, God is the sole and authentic source of the sacred scriptures. At the core of the Bible lies the essence of who God is. This means that the Word of God is complete, inerrant, clear, and understandable. It is sufficient for our salvation and possesses the final authority in matters of faith and practice.
Dearly beloved in Christ Jesus, the word of God is non-negotiable and irreplaceable. It holds the whole counsel of God and answers to every issue.
It is an error to elevate one’s personal feelings or revelations, the teachings of any revered Christian leader, and the traditions of our churches above the Word of God. While this is no way to water down biblical commentaries or sermons, there is a need for you to acquaint yourself thoroughly with the Word of God more and to allow God’s word to be the final authority in the issues of your life. It is only the word of God that is infallible and has the power to teach, reproof, and correct to make you complete for every good worK. God bless you as you resolve to study and to know the scriptures and to hold the Word of God above all else.
