TOPIC: CONTINUE IN MY LOVE
THEME SCRIPTURE: “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you: continue in my love.” – John 15:9
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- What is love?
- How can we continue in the love of Christ?
The world's most beautiful verb is "to love." Hence, love has been the subject of too many films and books. Giving and receiving love is life's greatest joy. Years ago, I came across a quote that said, "It is a tragedy to come to the end of life and not have told those you love that you loved them." Expressing love is at the center of our lives. Amazingly, not many know what love is.
Precious One, love is not a feeling; love is accurate knowledge; true value. Based on accurate knowledge, love is the value you place on another person.
This is why God's love valued us as much as Christ's blood while we were sinners (Romans 5:8). In this light, Jesus reminds His disciples that He has loved them as much as the Father has loved Him. Therefore, they must continue in His love (John 15:9). This is the triad of love that defines the relationship existing between the Father, the Son, and the disciple. So, Jesus commands us to “continue in my love.”
How can we, as His disciples, continue in this love, which is as deep as God Himself and as wide as the boundless?
Precious one, the Master means we should love as deeply and dearly as He has loved us when He says "Continue in my love." His love is selfless, not selfish. His love is immensely rich. Thus, John the Apostle wrote, "Behold, what manner of love the Father has bestowed upon us that we should be called the sons of God." (1 John 3:1). Know everyone's worth as a disciple. Christ died for all—rich, poor, educated, illiterate, old, young, male, and female.
Every person is worth Christ's blood, regardless of social, academic, or economic status. Treat people with this value.
"Continue in my love," as God so loved the world that He gave… (John 3:16). Precious One, giving is true love's greatest joy. The Master wants us to continue in His love by bringing His salvation to our world. We are saved by His love, and we must save others by it. Thus, the prophet Obadiah said, "And saviors shall come up on Mount Zion to judge the Mount of Esau, and the kingdom shall be the Lord's." (Obadiah 1:21)
"Continue in my love" by serving one another. After supper, Jesus took off His garment. He took a towel and girded Himself. He then filled a basin with water and washed His disciples' feet (John 13:4-5). After washing their feet, He said, "If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you ought to also wash one another's feet." (John 13:14).
Precious One, only by continuing in Christ's love will His joy remain in us and our joy be full (John 15:11). Let’s continue in His love because His love is the greatest (1 Cor 13:13). God bless you more.
