TOPIC: I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Then spoke Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” – John 8:12
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- What did Jesus mean when He says I am the light of the world?
- What does this claim by Jesus mean for all mankind?
At this moment, Jesus boldly faces the Pharisees and resumes dialogue with them. In the background of this encounter are the four great candelabras in the court of the women that have been lit on the first day of the feast of Tabernacle (John 7:2). The candelabras were a reminder that the children of Israel were guided at night by a pillar of fire in the wilderness pilgrimage. Then Jesus spoke, without leaving any doubt, that He is the light of the world. What is Jesus trying to pitch here with this statement?
The Hebrews' quintessence of the nature of God is light.
Therefore, David said, “The Lord is my light and my salvation…” (Psalms 27:1). By asserting that He is the light of the world, Jesus is saying that He is God, and has the nature of God. During the time of healing the blind at birth, Jesus makes the claim again that He is the light of the world (John 9:5).
Precious one, John by the Spirit, understood Jesus' claim better and wrote, “In Him [Jesus] is life, and the life was the light of men” (John 1:4).
Thus, this light Jesus talks about, that He is, is a life - eternal life. Eternal life is not the same as animal or human life. It is the life of God.
Remember, you cannot talk about light without considering darkness. Right from the fall of man, this world and all the life in it fell under the dominion of darkness. Satan ruled it. Darkness is a representation of all that is evil, backward, degenerating, painful, and deteriorating to the human life.
Beloved, what does Jesus’ claim mean for the man who is walking in the imagination of the thought of his own heart? There is hope. He [Jesus] is the light of the world so that the people walking in darkness would see a great light: those dwelling in the land of the shadow of death, upon them the light will shine (Isa 9:2). If you are such a one, turn to, and yield your life to the Light, and yeah, though you may walk through the valley of the shadow of death, you will fear no evil.
Because the light of the world will be with you.
What does Jesus’ claim mean for the man who is His follower? Jesus is the light of the world, so that those who follow Him [the light] shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life, as our theme scripture reveals. The one who has the Son [Jesus] has life and the one who has not gotten the Son [Jesus] has no life (1 John 5:12). Are you such a one, who is a follower of that Great Light? Then keep following Him. Keep trusting Him. He lives in you. Glory Hallelujah!
