TOPIC: CHRIST JESUS, OUR MEDIATOR
THEME SCRIPTURE: For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 1 Timothy 2:5
PREPARATORY QUESTION:
1. Who is a mediator?
2. What makes Christ Jesus our mediator?
Forgiveness is one thing every person has ever needed, at some point in life. At that time, we had blown it big time and forgiveness was the only option to settle the matter. In such instances as that, depending on the gravity of the issue, sometimes people appeal to men of honor to lead them to seek forgiveness and make peace. Such men of honor take up the role of ensuring peace between two parties at variance. So, it can be said that a mediator is not a mediator of one party but rather two parties.
A mediator stands as the middle person and his business is to reconcile the parties. Such is Jesus Christ for us and God.
Precious One, one of the most difficult struggles of the human soul is the struggle to live above evil. It is evil that has placed us at variance with God (Isa 59:1-2). Evil has had dominion over the human race for many centuries, bringing enmity between man and God. The need for a mediator dates back to the Garden of Eden when man fell from God’s manifold graces.
As a mediator, Jesus bore our sorrows and carried our iniquities. He was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities (Isa 53:4-5). He became our substitute and suffered in our place.
What does this mean for you and me?
It means that when we sin, there is no need to continue in the sin or remain under the guilt of it. Rather, remember your mediator, Jesus Christ, who is the propitiation lamb for our sins (1 John 2:1-2). Jesus, being our mediator also means that, we have someone to talk through to God. Therefore Jesus said, “whatsoever you shall ask the Father in my name, He will give it to you” (John 16:23). Our mediator and advocate is so loved by the Father such that His name is enough to get a ‘Yes’ from the Father. Through Jesus Christ our mediator a new covenant has been established and His blood has been the seal to this new covenant (Heb 12:24).
Precious One, rejoice. You are better placed in this life because you have a mediator.
Your life can never be miserable because there is someone who is always standing between you and God. This is also good news to those who have not settled their old life of sin with God. We need to go and tell them that there is a mediator for them whose business is to reconcile mankind back to God. His service is free. Is there a friend who has not settled his old life with God? Tell him or her. Is there a relative who is also in a similar situation? Tell him or her. Work colleague or neighbor? Tell them.
There is one God, but also one mediator between God and men, the man Jesus Christ who died and rose again. Glory to Jesus!
