TOPIC: HAVE GENUINE CONCERN FOR OTHERS

THEME SCRIPTURE: Philippians 2:19-24

PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:

  1. Do you genuinely seek the welfare of others?
  2. What does it mean to seek the welfare of believers?

We note an extraordinary concern from Paul towards the welfare of believers in all his writings. Paul’s concern for fellow Christians was so iconic in all his writings. Growing into Christian maturity by the recipients of his letters were passionately expressed in the prayers he made for them. Such an attribute is very rare in our days, possibly among all believers.

Here in our focus scripture, we observe the Apostle Paul introduce one of his kind. He testifies of Timothy as having the same attribute we see in Paul. The context suggests others were around. Hence, he notes that some sought their own interest and not that of Jesus. However, with Timothy, he says “For I have no one like him, who will be genuinely concerned for your welfare”.

This is a praise-worthy testimonial, and it is worthy of emulation.

Paul knew Timothy this way because of the relationship that existed between them. Timothy was with Paul in most of his missionary journeys in Thessalonica and Berea (Acts 17:1-14), in Corinth and Ephesus (Acts 18:5, Acts 19:21-22). He was also with him in prison in Rome (Colossians 1:1). This confirms his testimony about Timothy to be true. Timothy was trustworthy and as genuinely concerned as Paul himself was for the welfare of Christians. Paul trusted him to be a faithful emissary to bring him the right information and to be a source of comfort to the people he visits as well. He alludes to the fact that Timothy has proven himself worthy and the fact that as a son he served with him for the sake of the gospel.

Beloved in the Lord, genuine concern for the welfare of fellow Christians is missing within the body of Christ. This is a stuck reminder and an encouragement to abandon all forms of selfishness in our relationships, and demonstrate genuine care for the welfare of other Christians. We are in difficult times, and the need to show concern by praying for friends, spouses, children and fellow Christians is a great necessity.

A simple call or visit to check on others and to share an encouragement will go a long way to lighten the burden on a brother or sister. Offering tangible help in areas of need is encouraged.

People are going through tough times and the need to offer support through a genuine concern for their welfare is the clarion call to you and all believers.

Why don’t you use today to look beyond yourself by asking – whose face can I put a smile on by calling, praying for, or sending a note of care or a gift of kindness? Let it be done for you and more as you show concern for the brethren. Hallelujah
