TOPIC: DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE?

THEME SCRIPTURE: “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” — 1 John 3:1 (ESV)

PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:

1. How will you answer this simple question, “Who are you”?

Much of our worry is not about circumstances— it’s about who we think we have to be. Anxiety thrives when identity is unstable. We worry because we feel the pressure to prove our worth: through grades, productivity, appearance, or success. Jesus lived free from this burden because his identity was settled before his ministry ever began.

At His baptism, before a sermon was preached or a miracle performed, the Father declared, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased” (Mark 1:11). This is remarkable.

That affirmation from the Father to the Son preceded action. Jesus did not work for approval; he worked from it. This is why opposition did not undo him, and praise did not inflate him.

Irenaeus wrote, “The glory of God is a human being fully alive.” Yet we are rarely fully alive when we are anxious—only guarded, driven, and defensive. Anxiety signals that we are trying to earn what has already been given. Sonship and daughterhood remove the need for constant self-justification.

When identity is drawn from roles or results, it never satisfies. It always demands more. But identity rooted in God’s love creates freedom.

Jesus repeatedly withdrew from moments that could have reinforced a false identity. After feeding the five thousand, when the crowd wanted to make him king, He slipped away and went alone to the mountain (John 6:15). He refused shortcuts to significance. Anxiety would have urged him to seize the moment. Identity allowed him to walk away.

Key Takeaway

When identity is rooted in God’s love, anxiety no longer gets to define your life.

Precious one, you are not what you produce. You are not what others expect. You are not what you fear losing. In Christ, your life is hidden and secure (Col. 3:3). When that truth sinks in, worry loses its strongest footholds in your life. Today, reflect on your identity within Christ and cast away every fear and worry.

Remain blessed.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD:

  1. Where do you feel pressure to prove your worth?
  2. How do success or failure affect your sense of identity?
  3. What would change if you lived today from God’s approval, not toward it?

PRAYER

Father, anchor my heart in who I am to you. Free me from striving for worth that you have already given. Help me live from love, not fear. Amen. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
