TOPIC: ACCESS GRANTED

THEME SCRIPTURE:  "Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need."—Hebrews 4:16

 

 

PREPARATORY QUESTION

1. Do you approach God like someone who belongs in his presence, or like someone hoping not to be turned away?

 

 

Before Christ, access to God's presence was restricted, mediated, and dangerous — a curtain separated the Holy of Holies from everyone but a single priest, once a year, after extensive ritual preparation. That barrier wasn't arbitrary. It reflected something real about the gap between a holy God and sinful people. Then, at the moment of Christ's death, that curtain tore from top to bottom — not bottom to top, as a human hand might tear it, but from heaven's side, initiated by God himself.

That detail matters. It means the access we now have wasn't won by our effort climbing toward God. It was granted by God reaching down and removing the barrier entirely. This is why Hebrews can use the word "confidence" — not caution, not hesitant hope, but bold, settled approach. The kind of confidence a child has walking into a parent's room, not the kind a stranger has requesting an audience.

Many believers still pray like the curtain is intact — tentative, formal, uncertain whether they're welcome, treating God's throne like it might turn them away. But the writer of Hebrews specifically calls it a throne of grace, not a throne of judgment. Its purpose isn't to catalog your failures before granting entry. It's to dispense mercy and help precisely because you need it, not because you've earned the right to ask.

This access isn't a one-time privilege reserved for crisis moments. It's a standing invitation, open in every season — your successes, your failures, your uncertainty, your ordinary Tuesday. The door was never closed. The question is whether you've been living like it is.

PRAYER

Father, thank you that the curtain is torn and the way to you is open. Forgive me for approaching you with hesitation you never asked for. Teach me to come boldly, not because I've earned it, but because you've already made the way. Meet me with mercy and grace in every place I need it. In Jesus' precious name, Amen.
